UniMac Commercial Washer Error Code E FL: Fill Timeout

E FL is the fill error on UniMac washer-extractors: the control expected the water to reach the programmed level and it never did. Switch the machine off to clear it, open both water supply valves fully, and look over the hoses for kinks. Call us if E FL returns.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the cycle ends without a full fill, so the load is not washed until the water supply or valves are corrected.

Applies to
CHM495R family washer-extractor front-end control (20-100 lb) / PHM1263R family pocket hardmount washer-extractor (UWL/UWN/UWU 035-125) front-end control / CHM1792C family washer-extractor (QN models, 20-100 lb) front-end control

What does UniMac error code E FL mean?

After the cycle calls for water, the control opens the fill valves and watches the level sensor. If the level does not reach the programmed point, it waits a set time and then gives up with E FL. The QN control waits 30 minutes before giving up, and the UC and UW controls wait 10 minutes. On QN machines the timer can be programmed off. The cycle ends and the display shows E FL. The simplest reason is that a supply valve at the wall is partly closed. Inlet screens at the fill valves can be clogged with scale or debris, and in areas with hard water that happens often. The fill valve coils and the hoses behind them can fail, and the water level sensor and its tubing can misreport the level so the control keeps waiting.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to UniMac QN (such as the UCA020QN), UC-series (such as the UCH020GNF) and UW pocket hardmount (such as the UWL035K12) washer-extractors in the CHM1792C, CHM495R and PHM1263R families.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • E FL on the display
  • Drum taking on very little water
  • Fill valves clicking but no water flow
  • Cycle ending after a long wait

Possible causes

Listed in UniMac's documentation

  • Whether the hot and cold supply valves at the wall are fully open
  • Inlet screens at the fill valves for scale or debris
  • Fill valve coils and the hoses behind them
  • The water level sensor and its tubing

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E FL on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A building supply pressure drop at peak laundry hours
  • Hoses crushed when the washer was pushed back against the wall
  • A fill valve whose coil has weakened so it only partly opens

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Switch the machine off at its power control to clear the code. On QN machines, disconnect power and reconnect it.
  2. Open both water supply valves at the wall all the way.
  3. Look over the supply hoses for kinks.
  4. Run a brief rinse and see if the drum takes on water.
  5. If E FL returns, note whether hot, cold or both are slow, and call us.

How a technician diagnoses error code E FL

  1. Ask whether hot, cold or both seem weak and whether other machines fill normally.
  2. Check the supply valves, hoses and pressure at the machine.
  3. With the water off, remove and inspect the inlet screens.
  4. Test each fill valve coil and watch it open.
  5. Check the level sensor and its tube against the actual level.
  6. Clean or replace the failing screen, valve or sensor.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Removing fill valves and screens involves pressurized water and hot water on some machines.
  • Fill valve coils run on live control circuits.
  • Telling a sensor problem from a low-flow problem needs the actual level compared with the reading.

How error code E FL differs from similar codes

E FL is a fill that never reached the level, whereas E LF is a leak that raised the level too much.

E FLQuestions about UniMac error code E FL
Why does the QN wait longer than UC and UW?

The QN control waits 30 minutes, and the UC and UW controls wait 10 minutes. The QN timer can also be programmed off.

Could hard water cause E FL?

Yes. Scale can clog the inlet screens at the fill valves.

Is it the sensor or the valves?

Either. We compare actual water level with the sensor reading to tell them apart.
