UniMac Washer Error Code E SP: Control Communication
E SP on a UniMac UC-series or UW pocket hardmount washer-extractor is a communications error inside the control, where the main control has lost touch with the motor control or the output board. Power the machine down, wait, and power it up again. If E SP returns right away, leave the machine off and call us.
High: the machine cannot command its motor, so cycles stop until the link is restored.
What does UniMac error code E SP mean?
E SP is a communications error inside the control of UniMac UC-series washer-extractors such as the UCH020GNF and UW pocket hardmount washer-extractors such as the UWL035K12. The main control does not run the motor directly. It sends commands to a motor control, and on pocket hardmount machines also to an output board, and it expects them to answer. When that link is lost, the main control cannot command the motor. The washer stops its cycle because it cannot tell the motor what to do, and the display holds the message E SP. On UC machines an unplugged transformer or wrong motor-control wiring is the usual cause. The manual lists the transformer plug and connector seating, the leads running from the main control to the motor control, the output board connection on pocket hardmount machines, and the control board condition if the link will not come back.
Affected models and control systems
Listed for UniMac UC-series washer-extractors (CHM495R family, 20-100 lb), such as the UCH020GNF, and UW/UWL/UWN/UWU 035-125 pocket hardmount machines (PHM1263R family), such as the UWL035K12.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Cycle stops and E SP stays on the display
- The drum does not turn when a cycle is started
- The code comes back right after a restart
- Display and keypad respond but the machine's loads do not
Possible causes
Listed in UniMac's documentation
- Transformer plug and connector seating
- Leads running from the main control to the motor control
- Output board connection on pocket hardmount machines
- Control board condition if the link will not come back
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E SP on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A transformer plug shaken loose by vibration during spin cycles
- Motor-control leads rubbing together where they pass the frame
- Power-line noise or a brownout interrupting the link at the moment a cycle starts
Safe checks before calling for service
- Power the machine down, wait a moment, then power it up and try the cycle again.
- Before touching anything, confirm the door is shut and the drum is at rest.
- Do not open the control cabinet.
- If E SP returns right away, leave the machine off and call us.
- Note whether the code came at power-up or during a particular cycle step.
How a technician diagnoses error code E SP
- Read the code and confirm the model and whether it is a UC or a UW pocket hardmount control.
- Verify the incoming supply and the transformer output to the control.
- Inspect the transformer plug, the main-to-motor-control leads and the output board connection for seating and damage.
- Check the motor control's supply and signal with a meter, following the wiring diagram.
- Replace the lead, connector, motor control or board only after tests, then run a full spin cycle.
- The motor control and transformer run on 208-240 V, and their connections are behind panels that should only be opened by a technician.
- A communication loss can come from a plug, a lead, the motor control or the main control, which takes systematic testing to separate.
- Wrong or reversed motor-control wiring can damage the control, so reconnection has to follow the wiring diagram.
How error code E SP differs from similar codes
E SP concerns the link between the main control and the motor control or output board. On QN machines, the board-to-board communication message is E nr instead.

Related UniMac washer error codes
Is E SP a motor failure?
Not necessarily. It says the controls cannot talk to each other. The motor may be fine. We check the transformer plug and wiring first.
Can I keep washing if E SP clears after a restart?
You can try, but a connection that drops once will usually drop again. If it returns, stop and call us before a cycle stops with a wet load inside.
My machine is older. Is it worth fixing?
Often yes, because wiring and plug problems are inexpensive to correct. We tell you before replacing a board.
