UniMac Washer Error Code E SH: Shorted Temperature Sensor
E SH means a UniMac washer-extractor reads its temperature sensor circuit as shorted, which the control sees as extreme heat. The wash water is not that hot. Dismiss or power-cycle as the manual describes, skip heated cycles, and call us if E SH returns.
Medium: the machine can run cold cycles but cannot control wash temperature.
What does UniMac error code E SH mean?
E SH is the shorted temperature sensor error on UniMac QN, UC-series and UW pocket hardmount washer-extractors. The temperature sensor changes its resistance with water temperature, and the control measures that resistance. A short in the circuit, whether in the sensor or its wiring, drops the resistance to nearly nothing, and the control reads that as extreme heat. The limits are above 212 F on the UC control and above 220 F on the UW control. Since water in a washer does not reach those readings, the control knows the sensor circuit is wrong and shows E SH. On QN machines the error appears at the end of the cycle. The wash water itself is normal. The manual lists pinched or burned wire insulation, a connector with moisture or corrosion shorting the pins, a sensor that has shorted inside, and a control input that reads the shorted sensor as extreme heat.
Affected models and control systems
Listed for UniMac QN washer-extractors (CHM1792C family), UC-series (CHM495R family, 20-100 lb) and UW/UWL/UWN/UWU 035-125 pocket hardmount machines (PHM1263R family). The shorted limit is above 212 F on UC and above 220 F on UW.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E SH on the display, on QN machines at the end of the cycle
- Heated washes do not heat properly
- An unrealistic high temperature reading on machines that display temperature
- The heater or heated steps are skipped after the code appears
Possible causes
Listed in UniMac's documentation
- Sensor wiring with pinched or burned insulation
- Connector with moisture or corrosion shorting the pins
- Temperature sensor that has shorted inside
- Control input that reads the shorted sensor as extreme heat
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E SH on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Steam and condensation getting into the sensor plug in a poorly vented laundry room
- A sensor lead laid against a hot surface and its insulation cooked over time
- Wire strands touching after a panel was refitted without care
Safe checks before calling for service
- On a QN machine, opening the door or pressing a key dismisses the code.
- On other machines, power down and then up again.
- Keep the door closed and the area around the machine dry and clear.
- Should E SH return, skip heated cycles and call us for a visit.
- Note the model and which wash temperature was selected.
How a technician diagnoses error code E SH
- Read the code, the model and the control generation to know which limit applies.
- With power off, inspect the sensor connector and wiring for burned insulation, moisture and corrosion.
- Measure the sensor resistance at the plug and compare it with the manual's temperature chart.
- Check the wiring run between the sensor and the control for shorts to ground or between conductors.
- Replace the sensor or repair the wiring after the test, then run a heated cycle and check the temperature climbs steadily.
- Testing the sensor circuit means unplugging connectors on a machine that carries 208-240 V behind the panels.
- A shorted wire, a wet connector and a shorted sensor all give the same reading, so each must be tested.
- Heating elements and steam valves stay off while the sensor is untrustworthy, and confirming the repair needs a powered heated cycle.
How error code E SH differs from similar codes
E SH is the shorted sensor message; E oP is its opposite, an open sensor circuit. The UC control uses 212 F and the UW control 220 F as its limit.

Related UniMac washer error codes
Is the water really that hot when E SH appears?
No. The control sees a short and reads it as very high temperature. The wash water stays normal.
Why do the UC and UW machines use different numbers?
Each control has its own limit: above 212 F on UC and above 220 F on UW. The meaning is the same, a sensor circuit that reads shorted.
Is it safe to keep washing?
Cold cycles may complete, but heated washes cannot be controlled. We recommend waiting for the repair before hot cycles.
