UniMac Washer Error Code E Sd: Slow Drain

E Sd on a UniMac washer-extractor means draining took longer than average, a warning that comes before the drain alarm E dr. Look at the floor drain and the drain hose for a blockage or pinch. On a QN machine, the lit decimal point goes out after three presses of START inside five seconds.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the machine keeps running but the drain is slowing toward a stop alarm.

What does UniMac error code E Sd mean?

E Sd is the slow drain error on UniMac QN, UC-series and UW pocket hardmount washer-extractors. During each drain the control times how long the water takes to leave and compares that with the usual drain time. When draining takes longer than average, the control records a slow drain. The way it shows depends on the machine. On UW machines it is logged in the audit data, on UC machines it is a detection during the cycle, and on QN machines the right-most decimal point on the display lights. The machine keeps working, because water is still leaving, only slowly. That makes E Sd a warning and not a stop. If the drain gets worse, the control reaches the drain alarm E dr, and the cycle stops. The manual points to a partly blocked drain line or floor drain, lint and small items in the drain path, drain valve movement and the water level sensor response.

Affected models and control systems

Listed for UniMac QN washer-extractors (CHM1792C family), UC-series (CHM495R family, 20-100 lb) and UW/UWL/UWN/UWU 035-125 pocket hardmount machines (PHM1263R family). The lit decimal point is specific to QN displays.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Lit right-most decimal point on a QN display
  • Water standing in the tub longer than usual after the drain step
  • Cycles take longer to move from drain to the next step

Possible causes

Listed in UniMac's documentation

  • Drain line and floor drain partly blocked
  • Lint and small items in the drain path
  • Drain valve movement not as expected
  • Water level sensor response that does not match the drain

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E Sd on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Floor drain shared with other equipment and backing up when several machines drain together
  • A sock, button or lint ball sitting at the drain valve opening
  • A drain hose sagging into a low loop that holds water and slows the flow

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. On a QN machine, press START three times within five seconds, or power-cycle, to turn off the lit decimal point.
  2. Look at the floor drain and make sure water is leaving freely.
  3. See that the drain hose is not pinched or squashed anywhere.
  4. Watch the next drain. If it is still slow, call us.

How a technician diagnoses error code E Sd

  1. Check the audit or event data for slow drain counts and read which cycle step was running.
  2. Time a full drain and check the building drain, floor drain and trap for restrictions.
  3. Inspect the machine's drain hose and outlet for pinches, sagging and debris.
  4. Check that the drain valve opens fully and moves freely, and test its coil and wiring.
  5. Verify the level sensor reads the water leaving, then clear or replace the part the tests point to.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The drain valve is wired to line voltage inside the cabinet and has to be tested with the power locked out.
  • A partial blockage can sit in the building drain beyond the machine, which needs plumbing tools and access.
  • Confirming the level sensor follows the draining water takes controlled test cycles on the machine.

How error code E Sd differs from similar codes

E Sd is a warning about slow draining. E dr is the alarm that comes when the water has not left within 15 minutes and the cycle stops.

E SdQuestions about UniMac error code E Sd
Is E Sd the same as E dr?

No. E Sd is a warning that draining is slow. E dr is the alarm that stops the cycle when the water has not left in 15 minutes.

The machine still works. Do I need to call?

A slow drain is an early warning. If it persists it often ends in E dr and a stopped cycle, so a check now saves a flooded floor later.

What does the lit decimal point mean?

On QN machines it marks a slow drain event. Pressing START three times in five seconds, or a power cycle, turns it off.
