UniMac Washer Error Code Ed01: Drive Communication Lost

Ed01 on a UniMac UC-series washer-extractor means the front-end control and the motor drive have stopped exchanging messages. The drum cannot spin until the link is restored. Power the machine down and up, confirm the breaker and disconnect, and call us if it returns.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the drum cannot be commanded to spin until communication returns.

What does UniMac error code Ed01 mean?

Ed01 appears on UniMac UC-series washer-extractors such as the UCH020GNF when the front-end control and the motor drive stop talking to each other. The control decides the program, and the drive turns those commands into motor speed. The two exchange messages over a 6-pin connection, and the control expects a steady reply. If the replies stop, the control has no way to tell the motor what to do, so the cycle will not spin the drum until the link is back. The code applies to Design 2 and 3 models only. A restart is the first thing to try, because a drive that lost input power for a moment comes back and answers again. If it keeps coming back, the manual points to input power to the drive, the 6-pin connection, wiring and connector wear, and the condition of the drive board and control board.

Affected models and control systems

Listed for UniMac UC-series washer-extractors with a motor drive in the CHM495R family (20-100 lb), such as the UCH020GNF. The manual limits Ed01 to Design 2 and 3 models.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Ed01 on the display and the drum does not turn
  • The cycle stops at the first spin or tumble step
  • Keypad and display work, but the motor stays silent
  • The code reappears right after power-up

Possible causes

Listed in UniMac's documentation

  • Input power to the drive missing or interrupted
  • The 6-pin connection between the control and the drive
  • Wiring and connector wear
  • Drive board and control board condition

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Ed01 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A breaker that tripped on the drive circuit while the control stayed powered from another feed
  • Vibration working the 6-pin connector slightly loose over many spin cycles
  • A brownout that reset the drive but not the control, leaving them out of step

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Power the machine down.
  2. If you can see the power supply to the machine, confirm the breaker is on and the disconnect is closed.
  3. Do not open the cabinet to reseat plugs.
  4. Power the machine up and try again. If Ed01 returns, call us.
  5. Note whether the code appears at power-up or only when the spin should begin.

How a technician diagnoses error code Ed01

  1. Read the code and confirm the machine is a Design 2 or 3 model with a drive.
  2. Measure the input voltage at the drive and the control with the circuit confirmed live and correct.
  3. Inspect the 6-pin communication cable and connectors for wear, corrosion or looseness.
  4. Check the drive's status indicators and its power supply against the wiring diagram.
  5. Replace the cable, drive or control only after the link and power tests, then run a spin cycle.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The drive carries line voltage and stored charge, so its connectors should not be touched without a lockout and a discharge wait.
  • Distinguishing a bad cable, a bad drive and a bad control board takes a meter and the machine's wiring diagram.
  • Reseating the 6-pin plug without checking the cause only hides a problem that comes back mid-cycle.

How error code Ed01 differs from similar codes

Ed01 is the loss of the link. The other Ed codes, such as Ed02 and Ed05, assume the link works and report a voltage or current problem inside the drive.

Ed01Questions about UniMac error code Ed01
Does Ed01 mean the motor has failed?

Not necessarily. It says the control and drive are not communicating, and the motor may be fine.

Will a restart fix Ed01?

It can, especially after a power dip. If the code returns, the connection or the drive needs a proper test.

Is Ed01 the same on every UniMac washer?

No. It is listed for Design 2 and 3 UC-series machines with a drive, so the data plate matters.
