UniMac Washer Error Code Ed04: Locked Rotor
Ed04 on a UniMac UC-series washer-extractor with a motor drive means the motor did not reach speed at startup, so the drive stopped the cycle. Power down, empty the drum and look from the front for anything wedged between the drum and shell. Do not force the drum; if Ed04 returns, call us.
High: the drum will not turn, and repeated attempts can overheat the motor.
What does UniMac error code Ed04 mean?
On UniMac UC-series washer-extractors such as the UCH020GNF with the motor drive, Ed04 is a locked rotor error. When the drive starts the motor, it expects the motor to begin turning and reach speed within a short time. If the motor stays still or turns far too slowly, the motor is drawing current against a drum that will not move, and that heats the windings quickly. To protect the motor, the drive stops the cycle and shows Ed04. Design 2 and 3 models are the ones that report it. A mounting problem or something stuck in the drum area is the first thing to rule out. The manual also lists the motor mounting and the belt or drive coupling, obstructions near the drum or basket, the motor windings and wiring, and bearing drag on the drum.
Affected models and control systems
Listed for UniMac UC-series washer-extractors with a motor drive (CHM495R family, 20-100 lb), such as the UCH020GNF. The manual limits Ed04 to Design 2 and 3 models.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Ed04 on the display right after a spin or tumble starts
- A humming or buzzing motor with no drum movement
- The drum feels stiff or does not coast when the cycle stops
- A burning smell near the motor after repeated attempts
Possible causes
Listed in UniMac's documentation
- Motor mounting and belt or drive coupling
- Obstructions near the drum or basket
- Motor windings and wiring
- Bearing drag on the drum
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Ed04 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A small item such as a coin or garment strap lodged between the basket and the shell
- A belt that has slipped or come loose after heavy loads
- Worn drum bearings that make the first rotation stiff, especially when cold
Safe checks before calling for service
- Power the machine down.
- Make sure the drum is empty, and from the front only, look for anything wedged between drum and shell.
- Do not try to turn a heavy drum by force.
- If Ed04 returns, call us.
- Note whether the drum moved freely before the code and whether the motor hummed.
How a technician diagnoses error code Ed04
- Read the code and note whether it happens at every start or only with heavy loads.
- With power locked out, turn the empty drum by hand to feel for drag, rubbing or binding.
- Inspect the belt or coupling and the motor mounting for slip or looseness.
- Test the motor windings and leads with a meter for shorts or an open phase.
- Repair the obstruction or drive part, or replace the motor, only after the tests, then run a start and spin.
- The drum is heavy and can move suddenly, so checking it by hand requires a lockout and the right guards in place.
- Motor windings and the drive output are 208-240 V circuits, which should be tested only by a technician with a meter.
- Repeated start attempts against a locked drum can burn the motor, so the cause has to be found before the machine runs again.
How error code Ed04 differs from similar codes
Ed04 means the motor did not turn. Ed03 means the speed feedback is missing, and Ed08 means the current limit was exceeded while running.

Can I try again right away?
One try after checking the drum is fine. Repeated tries against a stuck drum can overheat the motor.
Is Ed04 a motor failure?
Often it is something else, such as an obstruction, belt or bearing drag. A technician tests before replacing anything.
Why only at startup?
Because the drive checks that the motor reaches speed during the first moments. Later problems show up as other codes.
