UniMac Washer Error Code Ed08: Maximum Overcurrent
Ed08 on a UniMac UC-series washer-extractor with a motor drive means the motor output went over its current limit, so the drive stopped the cycle. Power down and up, check that the load is not oversized or tightly packed, and try a lighter load. If Ed08 returns, stop using the washer and call us.
High: the drive cut the motor current, and cycles will not complete until the cause is found.
What does UniMac error code Ed08 mean?
On UniMac UC-series washer-extractors such as the UCH020GNF with the motor drive, Ed08 is a max overcurrent error. The drive measures the current going to the motor and compares it with a fixed limit. When the motor output goes over that limit, the drive stops the cycle to protect itself and the motor, and the display shows Ed08. Machines built as Design 2 or 3 are the only ones that show it. A drum that drags, a motor that is shorting or a surge in the supply are the first things to rule out. A heavily packed load makes the motor work harder and can contribute. The manual lists the motor and leads for a short or drag, drum and bearing resistance, the supply voltage condition, and the drive output stage.
Affected models and control systems
Listed for UniMac UC-series washer-extractors with a motor drive (CHM495R family, 20-100 lb), such as the UCH020GNF, Design 2 and 3 only.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Ed08 on the display during acceleration or spin
- Motor sounds strained before the cycle stops
- Code appears mostly with full or wet loads
- Drum stiff to turn after the stop
Possible causes
Listed in UniMac's documentation
- Motor and leads with a short or drag
- Drum and bearing resistance
- Supply voltage condition
- Drive output stage
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Ed08 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Overloaded drum after wet, heavy items such as mops or blankets are mixed in
- Dry or worn drum bearings that raise the torque needed to accelerate
- Low supply voltage that makes the motor draw more current for the same work
Safe checks before calling for service
- Power the machine down and up.
- Check that the load is not oversized or tightly packed.
- Start a lighter load and watch for the code.
- If Ed08 returns, stop using the washer and call us.
- Keep the cabinet shut.
How a technician diagnoses error code Ed08
- Read the code and note the load size and cycle step when it appears.
- Check the supply voltage at the machine, idle and under load.
- With power locked out, turn the drum by hand for drag and test the motor and leads for a short.
- Inspect the drive output connections and measure motor current during a spin.
- Replace the motor, bearings or drive only after current readings point to it.
- Measuring motor current means working live on 208-240 V leads next to a drum that can start moving.
- Bearing drag and motor shorts both give the same stop, which takes mechanical and electrical testing to separate.
- A drive that trips on overcurrent can be damaged by repeated restarts, so continued trials make the repair larger.
How error code Ed08 differs from similar codes
Ed08 is the general current limit at the motor output. Ed05 is the power stage short-circuit detection, and Ed04 is a motor that never gets moving.

Related UniMac washer error codes
Is Ed08 always an overloaded drum?
Often it is, but a dragging bearing or shorted motor also raises current. A lighter load is a safe first test.
Can Ed08 damage the motor?
The drive stops to prevent exactly that, but repeated restarts while the cause is still present can stress it.
Does a restart clear Ed08?
It clears the display. If the cause remains, the code returns on the next spin.
