UniMac Commercial Washer Error Code E d 31: Overload Current Detected
E d 31 on a UniMac QN washer-extractor is an overload current detection error. The drive saw the motor current climb into the overload range and stopped the cycle. Take the washer off power to reset it, check that the empty drum turns freely and do not overload the next cycle.
Medium: the cycle stops to protect the motor, and a heavy load alone may explain it.
What does UniMac error code E d 31 mean?
The drive watches how much current the motor pulls, and it has a band that counts as normal work and a higher band that counts as overload. When the current climbs into that overload range, the drive stops the cycle to protect the motor. That is E d 31. It is the mild member of the current error family, compared with the sharp surge of E d 23 or the sustained high current of E d 24. A drum that does not turn freely is the first thing to check, because bearing drag or a rubbing basket forces the motor to pull more current. Too much load in the drum, or very wet heavy linens, does the same. A motor with a worn winding can also draw excess current even in a normal load. The drive needs the power to be cycled to clear the code.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to UniMac QN washer-extractors of 20 to 100 lb, such as the UCA020QN, in the CHM1792C family with the front-end control and motor drive.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E d 31 on the display
- Washer stopping mid-extract with a full load
- Drum feeling heavy when turned by hand
- Code gone after a lighter load, then back with heavy linens
Possible causes
Listed in UniMac's documentation
- Drum or bearing drag pushing motor current into the overload range
- A load too large or heavy for the drum
- A motor drawing excess current from a worn winding
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E d 31 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Rolled-up blankets or mop heads that soak up water and exceed the rated load
- A bearing seal that has begun to bind when the machine is warm
- A suspension spring or shock that has worn so the basket scrapes during extract
Safe checks before calling for service
- Take the washer off power to reset the display.
- With power off and the drum still, check that the empty drum turns freely by hand.
- Do not overload the next cycle.
- Write down the type and weight of the load that was running.
- When E d 31 comes back, call us.
How a technician diagnoses error code E d 31
- Ask what the load was and how often the code appears.
- With power locked out, spin the empty drum by hand and feel for drag or a rub.
- Inspect the bearings, seals and suspension for wear.
- Check motor current draw against the rating on a normal load.
- Test the winding resistance and insulation.
- Replace worn bearings or the motor only after the test.
- Reading motor current means a clamp meter near live 208 to 240 V leads.
- A stiff drum has pinch hazards, and bearing work needs the right tools.
- Judging whether the load or the machine is to blame needs measured current, not a guess.

Related UniMac washer error codes
Is E d 31 just from a heavy load?
Sometimes. If the code comes back with an ordinary load, the drum or motor is drawing more than it should.
Is this less serious than E d 23?
It is milder, because it is an overload range reading rather than a sharp surge. It still needs checking if it repeats.
Can I keep running smaller loads?
Smaller loads may hide the problem for a while, but the cause is still there.
