Nor-Lake LogiTemp Walk-In Error Code EdF: Excess Defrost

EdF means excess defrost on a Nor-Lake walk-in with a Split-Pak system and the LogiTemp controller: in demand defrost, defrosts started too close together. Frequent defrosts warm the box and waste energy. Make sure the door closes and latches every time and tell us how often the box seems to defrost.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the system keeps running, but repeated defrosts waste energy and can warm the box.

What does Nor-Lake error code EdF mean?

Demand defrost lets the LogiTemp controller start a defrost only when the coil really needs one, instead of by the clock. If it starts defrosts too close together, the controller shows EdF. Each defrost warms the coil and the box, uses energy and interrupts cooling, so too many of them is a problem in itself. More often it is a sign of something that makes the coil frost up quickly. A door left open, a bad door seal, a worn strip curtain or a delivery pattern that lets humid air in all feed frost. A coil sensor or defrost termination sensor that misleads the controller can have the same effect, as can demand defrost settings that are too tight. The system keeps running its defrost cycles while EdF shows, so the first few hours may not feel like a failure. The better clue is how often defrost happens, and an operator who has noticed the pattern gives a technician a real head start.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to the LogiTemp controller on Nor-Lake walk-in coolers and freezers with a Split-Pak system running demand defrost.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • EdF on the display
  • Defrost cycles starting again and again
  • Box temperature swinging between defrosts
  • Ice or heavy frost on the evaporator coil

Possible causes

Listed in Nor-Lake's documentation

  • Worn door gasket, closer or strip curtain
  • Coil frosting quickly from warm, humid air entering the box
  • Coil and defrost termination sensor readings
  • Demand defrost settings on the controller

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code EdF on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Door propped open for deliveries during humid summer weather
  • Unsealed penetration in the box wall letting in moist air
  • Termination sensor reading warm too early, so defrost ends and starts again

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Make sure the walk-in door is closing and latching every time.
  2. Check that nobody is propping it open during deliveries.
  3. Look at the gasket for gaps or tears.
  4. Note how often the box seems to go into defrost and tell us when you call to schedule service.

How a technician diagnoses error code EdF

  1. Read EdF and review the defrost history and spacing.
  2. Inspect the door, gasket and strip curtain for air leaks.
  3. Check the coil sensor and termination readings against a reference.
  4. Review the demand defrost settings.
  5. Confirm the defrost interval returns to normal after the repair.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Defrost heaters and hot gas valves carry high voltage or refrigerant.
  • Demand defrost settings change energy use and box temperature and need the system data.
  • Finding an air leak in the box can require smoke or thermal checks.

How error code EdF differs from similar codes

Dtt reports defrosts that end by the timer. EdF reports defrosts that start too often.

EdFQuestions about Nor-Lake error code EdF
Is EdF dangerous for my product?

It can warm the box between cycles, so watch the temperature.

Can the door cause EdF?

Yes. Warm humid air from an open door is a leading reason the coil frosts quickly.

Does EdF stop defrost?

No. The system keeps defrosting, just too often.
