Nor-Lake LogiTemp Walk-In Error Code SCC: Short Compressor Cycle
SCC means short compressor cycle on Nor-Lake LogiTemp walk-ins using LPCO control: the compressor is starting and stopping too often, which wears it out and wastes power. The box may run warmer than it should. Listen for frequent starts, check a thermometer hourly, make sure nothing blocks the evaporator airflow and call us.
Medium: the compressor is wearing out and the box may warm, but cooling has not stopped.

What does Nor-Lake error code SCC mean?
A compressor is built to run in long cycles. Each start draws a surge of current and strains the motor and contacts, so a compressor that starts every minute or two wears out fast and wastes power. On a walk-in using LPCO control, the low pressure cut-out ends each run, because the system pumps down to a set pressure and stops. A short cycle therefore points to what ends the run too soon, or what lets it restart too soon. When the controller sees the compressor cycling too often, it shows SCC. The box may run warmer than it should because the compressor never runs long enough to cool it. The reasons are low cut-out and cut-in settings that are too tight, a liquid line valve that leaks so pressure rises after each stop, a low refrigerant charge that trips the cut-out soon after start-up, or poor evaporator airflow or an iced coil that triggers an early cut-out. SCC can come from several different causes, so pressures must be read before choosing a repair.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to LogiTemp KE2 controllers on Nor-Lake Split-Pak walk-ins using LPCO (low pressure cut-out) control.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- SCC on the display
- Compressor starting and stopping every few minutes
- Box temperature slowly rising
- Clicking from the contactor
Possible causes
Listed in Nor-Lake's documentation
- Low pressure cut-out and cut-in settings set too tight
- Liquid line valve that leaks, so pressure rises after each stop
- Low refrigerant charge that trips the cut-out soon after start-up
- Poor evaporator airflow or an iced coil that triggers early cut-out
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code SCC on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Evaporator fan weak or stopped, so the coil cannot absorb heat
- Slow leak at a joint that lowers the charge a little each week
- Defrost not clearing the coil and the airflow dropping
Safe checks before calling for service
- Note the code and listen for the compressor starting often.
- Look at a thermometer in the box once an hour.
- Make sure nothing blocks the evaporator airflow.
- Call us to schedule service, and leave the refrigeration lines and panels alone.
How a technician diagnoses error code SCC
- Read SCC and count the compressor cycles per hour.
- Connect gauges and watch pressures through a cycle.
- Check the liquid line valve for leak-through.
- Inspect the evaporator for ice and check the fans.
- Review the cut-out and cut-in settings and charge, then confirm run times.
- Short cycling can damage the compressor motor and contactor.
- Pressures must be read with certified gauges.
- Cut-out and cut-in settings change how the whole system behaves.
How error code SCC differs from similar codes
Pdt reports a pump-down that took too long. SCC reports the opposite: runs that end too soon.

Why is short cycling bad?
Each start strains the compressor, so frequent starts shorten its life.
Can SCC be a sign of a leak?
It can. A low charge can trip the cut-out soon after start-up.
Can I keep the box running?
For a short time. Please call soon and check temperatures meanwhile.
