Repairs this series usually needs

  1. Coin slide that jams or rejects coins
  2. Fill error on an older timer or EDC control
  3. Drain error with water left in the tub
  4. Control that will not take a programming wand
  5. Machine that starts but never agitates

This is the older end of the Speed Queen top-load range: the SWL numbers, a few SWN numbers and the SWT0 numbers, 34 in all. Numbers such as SWL520*N and SWT011*A3000 appear as the maker lists them, with the star standing for a letter or digit that changes from machine to machine.

The control tells you a lot about the washer. Some are plain timers, some use the EDC electronic control that is programmed with a Micro-wand, and later ones use MDC or NetMaster. On the older timer-and-EDC machines the fill error waits longer before it stops the cycle than the newer Quantum washers do, so a slow fill can look like a dead machine for a while.

These washers have been earning their keep laundry rooms for a long time. Where parts can still be had, we keep them running. The estimate comes in writing before the work, and if the cost passes the washer’s value, we say it.

FAQSpeed Queen SWL, SWN and SWT0 Metered Top-Load Washers questions
What is the star in a model number such as SWL520*N?

The star stands for a letter or digit that varies between machines. The data plate on your washer shows the complete number, and we match parts to that.

My coin-slide washer takes coins but never starts. What do you check?

We test the coin slide or drop, the lid switch and the control output in turn. A worn coin part is common on machines that have taken years of coins.

Is it worth repairing an older top-load washer?

Often yes, because these machines are simple and were built for daily use. Parts for the common wear items, such as coin slides, hoses and switches, are still easy to match, and we weigh the cost against the washer's value with you.
