AccuTemp Steamer Ignition Module LED: 3 Flashes, Ignition Lockout

Three flashes from the LED on an AccuTemp Evolution gas steamer's ignition module mean the module locked out because no flame was detected during ignition. The steamer will not heat until the lockout clears and the cause is found. Check that the gas shutoff is open, cycle power once, and call us if three flashes return.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the burner is locked out and the steamer will not heat until the cause is fixed.

What does AccuTemp Ignition module LED: 3 flashes mean?

Ignition module LED: 3 flashes reports a failed lighting attempt on an Evolution gas steamer. When the steamer asks for heat, the spark ignition module opens the gas valve, fires the spark, and then watches the flame sensor for a short, fixed window. If it sees flame, it holds the valve open. If it sees nothing, it closes the valve and locks out so that raw gas does not pour into the burner. The three blinks tell you the module tried and detected no gas flame. You may hear the clicking of the spark and see no flame at the burner. The steamer will not heat until power is cycled and the module is allowed another try, and if the cause is still there it will lock out again. The common reasons are simple ones, such as a closed gas supply, but an igniter that has worn out or a sensor that cannot see the flame produces the same three blinks. That is why one restart is a fair test and a second one is not.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to the spark ignition module on AccuTemp Evolution gas steamers, as described in the Evolution Gas/Propane service manual. Other ignition modules use different flash counts for lockout.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • The LED on the module blinks three times in a repeating pattern
  • You hear sparking but the burner does not light
  • The steamer does not heat
  • The pattern returns after a power cycle

Possible causes

Listed in AccuTemp's documentation

  • Gas supply shut off or interrupted at the steamer
  • Gas valve not opening
  • Spark electrode gap worn or wrong
  • Flame sensor unable to prove the flame

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind Ignition module LED: 3 flashes on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A spark electrode whose gap has opened from wear, so the spark is too weak to light the gas
  • A flame sensor with a film of scale that cannot sense a flame that is actually burning

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. If you notice gas in the air, get out and phone the gas company from a safe place.
  2. Check that the steamer's gas shutoff is open, and that other gas equipment is working.
  3. Switch the steamer off and on once.
  4. If the three flashes return, stop and call us.
  5. Do not open panels. Tell us whether you heard the spark and whether other gas equipment on the same line worked.

How a technician diagnoses Ignition module LED: 3 flashes

  1. Confirm three flashes and watch one full ignition attempt if it is safe to do so.
  2. Verify gas supply and pressure at the steamer.
  3. Check the gas valve for opening when called.
  4. Inspect the spark electrode gap and the flame sensor.
  5. Replace only the part that fails its test, then verify a clean, stable light.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Repeated ignition attempts on a locked-out module can send unburned gas into the burner chamber.
  • Gas pressure and valve tests need instruments and a live circuit that only a gas-qualified technician should work on.
  • The spark electrode and flame sensor sit beside the burner, inside a closed compartment.

How Ignition module LED: 3 flashes differs from similar codes

Three flashes means the module tried to light and found no flame. One flash is about combustion air before ignition, and two flashes is flame sensed when none is wanted.

Ignition module LED: 3 flashesQuestions about AccuTemp Ignition module LED: 3 flashes
Does three flashes mean no gas?

It means no flame was detected. A closed shutoff or empty line is a possible reason, but a worn spark electrode or sensor is just as common.

Will it clear itself?

Cycling power resets the lockout. If the cause is still there, it will lock out again.

How many restarts are safe?

One is a reasonable check. After that, stop and call us rather than repeating the attempt.
