Manitowoc Ice Machine Error Code E07: Starving Valve or Low Charge

E07 means a Manitowoc Indigo ice machine saw a large temperature difference across the evaporator for ten freeze cycles in a row. The board reads this as a starving expansion valve or low refrigerant. Check the water supply and condenser clearance, then call us; do not add refrigerant.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: ice output drops, but the machine still runs.

What does Manitowoc error code E07 mean?

E07 appears in the Event Log of Manitowoc Indigo ice machines without the NXT display. During the last minute of each freeze cycle, the board compares the temperature at the evaporator inlet with the temperature at the outlet. When the evaporator is fed correctly, the two stay close. If the difference exceeds 12 F for ten freeze cycles in a row, the board concludes the evaporator is not getting enough refrigerant. It reads this as a starving expansion valve on a single evaporator, or as a machine that is low on refrigerant. The result is less cooling at the plate, so ice output drops and slabs come out thin or uneven. The control makes this judgment from sensor readings, so a sensor that reads wrong could trigger the same entry without any refrigerant problem. That is why the log entry is a starting point, not a verdict. The display text is E07, and it takes a technician with gauges and sensor readings to say which cause is true.

Affected models and control systems

Manitowoc Indigo series cubers with the non-NXT control board (Service menu > Event Log > View ELog). E07 applies to a single evaporator; dual-circuit machines log different entries such as E08. Other controllers use different numbers.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Ice slabs thin or uneven, thinner at the top of the plate
  • Lower ice output over several days
  • Longer freeze cycles
  • Longer pauses between harvests

Possible causes

Listed in Manitowoc's documentation

  • Refrigerant charge and leak points
  • Expansion valve operation and bulb contact
  • Evaporator inlet and outlet temperature sensors
  • Liquid line restrictions or a clogged drier

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E07 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A slow refrigerant leak at a fitting that has lost charge over months
  • An expansion valve bulb that has slipped off the suction line
  • A drier that is partly plugged and starves the valve

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Note whether ice slabs form unevenly or thin out at the top of the plate.
  2. Check that the water supply valve is open.
  3. Make sure the condenser area is clear of boxes and debris.
  4. Do not try to add refrigerant or open the cabinet.
  5. Call us and mention how long output has been low.

How a technician diagnoses error code E07

  1. Read the Event Log for E07 and how long output has been low.
  2. Check the evaporator inlet and outlet sensors against a reference thermometer.
  3. Connect gauges and compare pressures with the charge specification.
  4. Check the expansion valve bulb contact and insulation, and the drier for a temperature drop.
  5. Leak-check, repair and recharge by weight only after the cause is confirmed.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Adding refrigerant without finding the leak wastes charge and is regulated work for a certified technician.
  • Telling a starving valve from a bad sensor needs gauges and a calibrated thermometer.
  • The evaporator and compressor are sealed-system parts that cannot be tested from outside.

How error code E07 differs from similar codes

E07 describes a starving single evaporator, while E08 covers a dual-circuit machine with an expansion valve problem.

E07Questions about Manitowoc error code E07
Can I run the machine with E07?

It will keep making ice, but less of it, and thin slabs waste water and power. Plan a service call soon.

Will E07 go away by itself?

No. The entry comes from ten bad freeze cycles in a row, and the cause stays until it is repaired.

Is E07 the same as E09?

No. E07 is too little refrigerant reaching the evaporator, while E09 is liquid flooding it.
