Manitowoc Ice Machine Error Code E12: Curtain Switch Open Too Long
E12 means the ice curtain switch on a Manitowoc Indigo ice machine stayed open for many hours, so the machine believes the bin is full. Check that the plastic curtain hangs freely and swings back, clear anything holding it open, and see whether the bin is truly full. If it still will not start, call us.
Medium: ice production stops, but the cause is often simple and nothing is at risk.

What does Manitowoc error code E12 mean?
On Manitowoc Indigo ice machines without the NXT display, E12 appears when the ice curtain switch stays open for more than 12 hours on the E board, or 24 hours on a G board after revision 4.017. The curtain hangs in the path of falling ice. When ice fills the bin it pushes the curtain open, and the switch tells the board to stop making ice. If the switch never closes again, the board stays in a bin-full condition indefinitely and the machine sits idle, even when the bin is empty. The board logs E12 once the open time passes its limit. Staff notice that ice production has simply stopped, with no other sign. The cause is often mechanical, such as a curtain that is stuck, jammed by an object or held by ice, but a misaligned magnet or switch, or damaged wiring, produces the same result. The display text for the entry is E12.
Affected models and control systems
Manitowoc Indigo series cubers with the non-NXT control board (Service menu > Event Log > View ELog). The 12-hour limit applies to the E board; the G board after revision 4.017 uses 24 hours.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- No ice being made while the bin looks empty
- Curtain hanging crooked or not swinging back
- Ice stuck against the curtain
- Machine idle but powered
Possible causes
Listed in Manitowoc's documentation
- Curtain position and free movement
- Curtain switch and magnet alignment
- Ice buildup holding the curtain open
- Wiring to the switch
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E12 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A bridged pile of ice in the bin holding the curtain open
- A scoop or tray left resting against the curtain
- A curtain that was reinstalled after cleaning with the magnet turned the wrong way
Safe checks before calling for service
- Look at the plastic curtain and make sure it hangs freely and swings back.
- Clear any ice or object holding it open.
- Check that the bin is not truly full.
- If the curtain moves freely and the machine still will not start, call us.
How a technician diagnoses error code E12
- Read the Event Log for E12 and note the board type and revision.
- Check the curtain's free movement and the magnet alignment.
- Test the curtain switch with a meter as the curtain opens and closes.
- Inspect the wire and connector to the switch for damage.
- Replace the switch or curtain only after the test shows it fails.
- Testing the switch means working near the control board, which carries live low-voltage and line connections.
- Knowing which board and revision applies decides which time limit the board uses.
- A switch that tests good may point to wiring or board problems that need a meter.
How error code E12 differs from similar codes
The E board and a G board after revision 4.017 use different time limits for the same entry.

Can I keep using the machine with E12?
The machine is idle, so there is nothing running to harm. Clearing the curtain usually gets ice making again.
Will E12 clear itself?
Once the curtain moves freely, the board resumes making ice. The log line stays as history.
Why does the bin look empty?
The board only knows the switch is open. A stuck curtain looks the same to it as a full bin.
