Manitowoc Ice Machine Error Code E08: Expansion Valve Malfunction

E08 means the control board of a Manitowoc Indigo ice machine decided an expansion valve is not working correctly on a dual circuit. Watch whether the ice slab forms unevenly, confirm the water supply and condenser airflow, and call us. Leave the refrigeration circuit alone.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: ice production falls and the machine may eventually stop.

What does Manitowoc error code E08 mean?

E08 is an Event Log entry on Manitowoc Indigo ice machines without the NXT display. It applies to machines with a dual circuit feeding a single evaporator, both air-cooled and water-cooled. Two expansion valves share the job of feeding refrigerant to the evaporator, and the board watches the inlet and outlet temperatures to judge whether both are doing it evenly. When the readings suggest one valve is not working correctly, the board writes the entry. Ice production falls and freeze cycles stretch out before the machine eventually stops. What staff usually see is a thin or uneven slab, with one side of the plate freezing better than the other. The board is inferring a valve problem from temperatures, so the cause can also be a sensor reading wrong, a charge that is too low for both circuits, or a valve bulb that has lost contact with its line. Sorting those apart needs gauges and sensor readings. The display text for the entry is E08.

Affected models and control systems

Manitowoc Indigo series cubers with the non-NXT control board (Service menu > Event Log > View ELog). E08 applies to dual-circuit machines on a single evaporator. Other controllers use different numbers.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Ice forming unevenly across the plate
  • Ice output lower than usual
  • Freeze cycles that run longer
  • Machine eventually stopping on its own

Possible causes

Listed in Manitowoc's documentation

  • One of the two expansion valves feeding the evaporator unevenly
  • Evaporator inlet and outlet sensors reading wrong, so the valve looks bad
  • A refrigerant charge too low for both circuits to feed the plate
  • A valve bulb that has lost contact or insulation on the line

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E08 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A valve bulb strap that corroded and let the bulb drift from the suction line
  • A sensor lead on the evaporator that has been pinched or moved during cleaning
  • A partial leak that left one circuit starved before the other

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Watch the ice slab and note if it forms unevenly across the plate.
  2. Confirm the water supply valve is open.
  3. Check that condenser airflow is clear.
  4. Leave the refrigeration circuit alone.
  5. Call us with the model number and how long the slabs have looked uneven.

How a technician diagnoses error code E08

  1. Read the Event Log entries for E08 and any related ones.
  2. Compare evaporator inlet and outlet sensor readings against a reference thermometer.
  3. Connect gauges and check pressures and superheat on each circuit.
  4. Inspect each expansion valve bulb for contact and insulation.
  5. Replace the valve or sensor only after the readings prove which one is responsible.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Superheat readings on a dual circuit need gauges, temperature clamps and a refrigerant chart.
  • Finding which of the two valves is responsible means isolating each circuit, which is sealed-system work.
  • Any refrigerant added or recovered must be handled by a certified technician.

How error code E08 differs from similar codes

E08 is a dual-circuit valve entry, while E07 concerns a single evaporator that is short on refrigerant.

E08Questions about Manitowoc error code E08
Can I keep running the machine with E08?

It can keep making ice for a while, but output falls and the cycles get longer. Book a visit before it stops.

Will E08 clear by itself?

The entry remains in the log, and a sensor or valve cause does not fix itself.

Does E08 mean both valves are bad?

Not necessarily. The board points to the circuit, and a technician checks which valve or sensor is responsible.
