Manitowoc Ice Machine Error Code E19: Ice Thickness Probe

E19 means the ice thickness probe signal on a Manitowoc Indigo ice machine is out of range. Look at the slab to see whether it is much thicker or thinner than usual, and make sure the water valve is open. Do not pull the probe or bend its wire; call us.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the machine still runs, but slab thickness can drift and cycles become unreliable.

What does Manitowoc error code E19 mean?

On Manitowoc Indigo ice machines without the NXT display, E19 means the ice thickness probe signal is out of range. The probe tells the control board when the slab is thick enough to harvest, and the board follows a frequency coming from it. When that frequency falls outside the expected band, the board cannot trust the probe. The manual notes that the probe may be unplugged or may have a microphone problem. The result is ice that becomes thick or thin, and over time the machine runs on stored data instead of live readings from the probe. Staff usually see slabs that look wrong or harvests that happen at odd times. The display text for the entry is E19. The cause can be a loose plug, scale on the probe tip, a probe set at the wrong gap or loose in its mount, or a damaged lead. All of these need the machine powered down for inspection and then a test.

Affected models and control systems

Manitowoc Indigo series cubers with the non-NXT control board (Service menu > Event Log > View ELog). Machines with the NXT display use different numbers.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Ice slabs much thicker or thinner than normal
  • Harvests at odd times
  • Bridge of ice between cubes
  • Longer freezes

Possible causes

Listed in Manitowoc's documentation

  • An ice thickness probe unplugged at the Indigo board
  • A probe with scale on its tip that sends an odd frequency
  • A probe set at the wrong gap or loose in its mount
  • A damaged probe lead that breaks the signal to the board

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E19 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Hard-water scale that builds up faster in a machine without a water filter
  • A probe knocked out of position during cleaning
  • A probe lead rubbed through where it passes the evaporator frame

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Look at the ice slab and note if it is much thicker or thinner than normal.
  2. Make sure the water supply valve is open.
  3. Do not pull the probe or bend its wire.
  4. Call us and mention when the slabs first looked wrong.

How a technician diagnoses error code E19

  1. Read the Event Log for E19 and how long it has been recorded.
  2. Inspect the probe plug and lead for looseness or damage.
  3. Check the probe gap and mounting against the specification.
  4. Clean scale from the probe and test its signal.
  5. Replace the probe only if it still fails after cleaning and a good connection.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Probe testing needs the machine powered down and then live control-board readings.
  • Setting the probe gap incorrectly changes slab thickness for every cycle.
  • Reading the probe signal means opening the control area, which carries line voltage.

How error code E19 differs from similar codes

E19 relates to the thickness signal, while E20 covers the water-side checks that run alongside it.

E19Questions about Manitowoc error code E19
Can I keep using the machine with E19?

It will still make ice, but the thickness may be wrong and the machine may run on stored data. Book a visit.

Will E19 clear by itself?

Only if a loose connection happens to settle. A scaled or damaged probe stays out of range.

Is E19 caused by hard water?

Scale on the probe tip is one documented cause, so water quality can play a part.
