Manitowoc Ice Machine Error Code E11: Start-Up Cooling Failure
E11 means the refrigeration system of a Manitowoc Indigo ice machine did not respond at the start of freeze. Listen for the compressor and check that the condenser fan turns and the water valve is open. Do not open electrical compartments; call us right away.
High: the machine is not cooling and makes no ice until it is repaired.

What does Manitowoc error code E11 mean?
E11 is logged by Manitowoc Indigo ice machines without the NXT display when the refrigeration system fails to respond as the freeze cycle begins. The control board checks two things within two minutes of freeze start: the compressor discharge temperature should rise at least 10 F, and the evaporator should cool at least 10 F. If neither happens, the board concludes the sealed system is not doing its work. The machine is powered and may look normal, but ice stops forming. That fits several situations: a compressor that never started, a refrigerant charge so low that the evaporator will not cool, a contactor or wire that does not pass power, or a start-up sensor that reads wrong. The display text for the entry is E11. The entry says what did not happen, not why, so a technician measures the compressor current and the temperatures before choosing a repair.
Affected models and control systems
Manitowoc Indigo series cubers with the non-NXT control board (Service menu > Event Log > View ELog). The test applies at freeze start-up; other controllers use different numbers.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Machine powered but making no ice
- No compressor hum when freeze begins
- Evaporator plate staying warm
- Condenser fan not turning or air staying cool
Possible causes
Listed in Manitowoc's documentation
- A compressor that is not starting or running at freeze start-up
- A low refrigerant charge that keeps the evaporator from cooling
- A start-up discharge or evaporator sensor that reads wrong
- A contactor or compressor wire that fails to pass power
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E11 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A compressor start capacitor or relay that has weakened and cannot start the motor
- A tripped compressor overload that has not reset yet
- A leak that emptied the charge so the discharge never warms
Safe checks before calling for service
- Listen for the compressor starting and note whether the condenser fan turns.
- Check that the water supply valve is open.
- Do not open electrical compartments.
- Call us right away and tell us when ice last formed.
How a technician diagnoses error code E11
- Read the Event Log and confirm E11 and when it started.
- Check supply voltage and whether the contactor pulls in at freeze start.
- Measure compressor amp draw and check the start parts.
- Compare discharge and evaporator sensor readings with a reference thermometer.
- Check pressures for a charge loss before replacing any part.
- Compressor start parts work at line voltage and can shock or cause burns.
- Checking charge and pressures requires gauges and regulated refrigerant handling.
- A machine that cannot cool will not recover, so the cause has to be found with instruments.
How error code E11 differs from similar codes
E11 is the only entry in this group that tests whether cooling began at all, rather than judging how well it ran.

Related Manitowoc ice machine error codes
Can I keep the machine on with E11?
It will not make ice, and a compressor trying to start repeatedly can overheat. Turn it off and call us.
Will E11 clear itself?
Rarely. If the compressor or charge is the cause, the machine stays down until it is repaired.
Is E11 a sensor problem?
Sometimes. A wrong start-up sensor can trigger it, but a technician confirms that with a thermometer first.
Need help with Manitowoc error code E11?
A technician confirms the cause on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
