Speed Queen Washer Error Code E:02: Infra-Red Link Dropped
E:02 on older EDC topload washers means the infra-red connection to the Micro-wand IIIe was broken partway through. The wand was pulled away too soon. Aim it again and hold it still until the display confirms.
Low: only the wand exchange is affected; the washer keeps washing.

What does Speed Queen error code E:02 mean?
When the Micro-wand IIIe passes settings or reads audit data, the exchange takes a short time, and the infra-red link has to stay unbroken the whole way. The control tracks the conversation as it goes. If the signal disappears before the exchange is complete, it cannot tell whether the data arrived safely, so it reports a disconnection as E:02 (display text: E:02). The usual reason is simple: the wand was moved or taken away too soon. Only the programming or audit conversation is affected, not the wash cycle, and the control keeps the settings it had before the attempt, so nothing half-written is left behind. The manual also lists a wand battery that dies partway through and a dirty window that interrupts the link. These older timer-type toploads are still working in many laundries, and our technicians repair them. The remedy is patience: keep the connection until the wand or display shows the exchange has ended.
Affected models and control systems
Older Speed Queen timer-type topload washers with the EDC electronic control (Micro-wand IIIe programming). Newer Quantum washers use a different code set.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E:02 on the display after the exchange begins
- The wand stops reporting before it finishes
- The wash cycle is unaffected
Possible causes
Listed in Speed Queen's documentation
- Wand pulled away before the exchange finished
- Wand battery dies partway through
- Dirty window interrupts the infra-red link
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E:02 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A shaky hand or a wand resting on a vibrating washer lid during the transfer
- A wand with a loose battery door that cuts power with a small knock
Safe checks before calling for service
- Aim the Micro-wand IIIe at the communicator and keep the infra-red connection until the exchange ends, as the owner's manual says.
- Do not pull it away until the display confirms.
- Try again.
- If E:02 returns, book a visit and tell us how far into the exchange it failed.
How a technician diagnoses error code E:02
- Confirm E:02 appears midway through the exchange.
- Watch whether the link breaks at a repeatable point.
- Swap in a second wand or fresh batteries.
- Clean and inspect the infra-red window.
- Check the control receiver only after the tool and window are cleared.
- The receiver and its board are inside the control housing with line voltage present.
- Rewriting settings after an interrupted exchange needs the machine's own data confirmed first.
- A repeatable drop point may mean a receiver issue that only a meter and a known good wand can separate.
How error code E:02 differs from similar codes
E:0B and E:0C are the same kind of disconnection listed under separate numbers; E:02 is the first of that group.
