Speed Queen Washer-Extractor Error Code E db: Balance Switch Closed
E db appears on CHM495R washer-extractors with F-speed drives. The drive's balance switch input was closed when the drain step began, which should not happen with a settled load. Shut the machine down, redistribute the load, and try again.
Medium: the cycle stops, but redistributing the load often clears it.

What does Speed Queen error code E db mean?
Before the basket spins fast, the machine checks that the load is balanced. A balance switch on the drive trips if the machine shakes beyond a limit. At the start of drain, the switch should be open, because the load has settled. If the drive's balance switch input reads closed at that moment, the control will not start a spin it cannot trust and stops the cycle (display text: E db). Customers see a stopped machine with a wet load in the drum. The owner's manual clears it by shutting the machine down. It lists the drive balance switch and its wiring, load distribution, the drive input, and the machine suspension. A load bunched to one side is the easy case, while a switch stuck closed or a weakened suspension is harder to see. This code applies to the CHM495R family with variable frequency drives. The CHM1792C uses different drive codes and does not use E db.

Possible causes
Listed in Speed Queen's documentation
- Drive balance switch or its wiring closed
- Load not distributed evenly
- Drive input reading closed
- Machine suspension worn
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E db on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A switch stuck closed by lint or a worn lever
- Springs or mounts sagging so the cabinet leans at drain
Safe checks before calling for service
- Clear the code by shutting the machine down, which is the step in the owner's manual.
- Do not touch the door until its lock has released.
- Distribute the load evenly and try again.
- If the code returns, ask us for a visit and tell us what size and type of load it was.
How a technician diagnoses error code E db
- Read E db and run a balanced test load to see whether it repeats.
- Check the balance switch for free movement and correct position.
- Inspect the suspension, mounts and cabinet level.
- Check the switch wiring and the drive input.
- Replace the switch, wiring or mounts as the tests direct.
- The balance switch wiring leads to the drive board, which carries 208-240 V.
- Suspension work involves heavy parts and stored motion in the basket assembly.
- Setting the switch so that it trips at the right point is technician work.
How error code E db differs from similar codes
E db is specific to CHM495R drives; CHM1792C balance trouble uses its own codes.
