Speed Queen Quantum Washer Error Code E FL: Fill Timeout (30 Minutes)

E FL means the control waited 30 minutes, or the programmed fill time, for the pressure switch to open during a fill or agitate step and it never did. Check both supply faucets and the fill hoses. If E FL returns, call us.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the cycle stops and the load stays unwashed until water reaches the right level.

What does Speed Queen error code E FL mean?

A Quantum washer fills until the pressure switch tells the control the water has reached the programmed level. The control gives that fill a time limit, 30 minutes or the programmed fill time. If the pressure switch has not opened when the time runs out, the control assumes water is not arriving or is not being measured, and it stops filling. The cycle does not complete, and E FL appears on the display. On the older stacked washer/dryer control, it reads E:FL. What you usually find is an unfinished load in the drum. The code is silent on whether the problem is the water or the sensing. Closed or partly shut faucets, a kinked hose, clogged screens at the inlet, a stuck mixing valve, or pressure switch tubing that has loosened can each stop the level from being reported. The code does not say that water reached the tub, only that the control never saw the level it expected.

Affected models and control systems

This page covers Quantum frontload washers in the FLW1535C family, Quantum topload washers in the TLW13C family, and the washer side of the SWD447C stacked washer/dryer. Washer-extractors and the MDC control have their own pages.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • The washer stops with an unfinished load in the drum
  • Little or no water enters the tub
  • E FL is on the display

Possible causes

Listed in Speed Queen's documentation

  • Hot and cold water supply valves and hose kinks
  • Hose screens and the mixing valve at the washer inlet
  • Pressure switch and its tubing
  • Whether water actually reaches the right level

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E FL on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Building water pressure that drops when other machines in the room fill together
  • A pressure switch hose with a pinhole or a loose end, so the level is never reported

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Behind the washer, confirm both supply faucets are turned all the way open.
  2. Look for a kinked fill hose, without dragging the washer far from the wall.
  3. Give the door lock time to let go before you open the door; pulling on it is never the answer.
  4. If E FL returns, note whether any water entered the tub and call us.

How a technician diagnoses error code E FL

  1. Read the code and ask how much water, if any, reached the tub.
  2. Verify supply pressure and flow at both hoses, and clean the inlet screens.
  3. Test the mixing valve coils for correct operation when a fill step is commanded.
  4. Inspect the pressure switch, its tubing and its wiring for leaks or blockage.
  5. Replace the switch or the valve only after it fails its test.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The inlet valve coils and the pressure switch are wired behind the panels, and live testing needs a trained technician.
  • Moving a heavy washer to reach hoses risks injury and can pull a fill hose off its fitting.
  • Telling a bad valve from a bad switch needs meter readings taken at the right step of a cycle.

How error code E FL differs from similar codes

Washer-extractors report E FL with a different timer, and the MDC topload control allows a much longer fill, so the minutes quoted here apply only to the Quantum family.

E FLQuestions about Speed Queen error code E FL
Is it safe to keep using the washer after E FL?

You can try again after checking the faucets, but a repeating E FL means the load will not wash correctly.

Can low water pressure cause E FL?

Yes. A slow fill can run out the timer before the level is reached.

Why does the door stay locked?

The lock holds while the tub may contain water. Wait for it to release.
