What does Speed Queen error code E II mean?

Some Quantum topload washers lock the lid while the tub is moving or full of water. When a cycle finishes or stops, the control sends an unlock signal and checks that the lid lock released. If the lid is still locked after three tries, it shows E II. The wash load is then stuck behind a lid you cannot open, and the washer sits stopped with the code showing. The message belongs only to models that have a lid lock; washers without one never show it. The control cannot say why the lock refused to release, only that it did. A lid lock solenoid that stays latched or has a loose plug, a lid switch that reports the wrong lid position, a latch that sits out of line with its catch, or a control output that does not release the lock can each cause it. Prying at the lid is the one thing that makes it worse, since a bent catch turns a simple repair into a bigger one.

Affected models and control systems

This page covers Quantum topload washers in the TLW13C family that have a lid lock. Models without a lid lock do not show E II.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • The lid will not open after the cycle
  • E II shows on the display
  • The washer is stopped with a wet load inside

Possible causes

Listed in Speed Queen's documentation

  • A lid lock solenoid that stays latched or has a loose plug
  • A lid switch that reports the wrong lid position
  • A latch that sits out of line with its catch
  • A control output that does not release the lock

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E II on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A lid that has been pressed down hard by stacked items, so the catch binds against the latch
  • A lid lock that sticks after soap residue has dried on the latch

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Leave the lid alone and do not pry at it.
  2. Wait a few minutes with the washer idle, then try the lid again.
  3. Never jump a switch to get the lid open.
  4. If E II returns, note how many times it happened and whether you hear a click at the lid, and schedule service with us.

How a technician diagnoses error code E II

  1. Read the code and ask whether the lid was pressed on or leaned against.
  2. Inspect the lid, latch and catch alignment with power off.
  3. Check for voltage at the lid lock when an unlock is commanded.
  4. Test the lid switch for the position it reports.
  5. Check the control output, then replace only the part that fails.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The lid lock solenoid is energized at control voltage behind the panel, and testing it live needs a trained technician.
  • Prying the lid can bend the latch and trap the load with water still in the tub.
  • Separating a stuck solenoid from a bad lid switch or control output takes meter readings.

E IIQuestions about Speed Queen error code E II
Can I pry the lid to get my laundry out?

No. It can break the catch, and if water is still in the tub it can spill. Wait, then call if the lid stays shut.

Does every Quantum topload show E II?

No. Only models with a lid lock can show it.

Will waiting help?
