What does Speed Queen error code EC:30 mean?
A card transaction is a short conversation between the reader and the washer's control. The control sends a request and waits for the reader to answer within a set time. If no answer comes in time, the control gives up and shows EC:30 with the display text “Timeout Error”. The manual's meaning is just that the card reader timed out.
Timeout is a general result. It does not say why the answer was late, and the manual lists no causes. What it does say is that the card reader may need to be replaced, with no retry or reset steps for operators. A reader that times out only on one card might be struggling with that card, whereas one that times out for every card is more likely to have a hardware or connection problem. Watching for that pattern is something an operator can do, and it helps the technician choose where to start.

Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code EC:30 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Loose reader connection that breaks the conversation with the control
- Slow or locked-up reader electronics
- A damaged card that the reader keeps trying to process
Safe checks before calling for service
- Remove the card, wait a few seconds and try again with the same card.
- Try a different card and compare the result.
- Check whether other washers in the room accept the first card.
- Report whether EC:30 appears for every card or only for one.
How a technician diagnoses error code EC:30
- Reproduce the timeout with several cards.
- Inspect the reader cable and connector for looseness or damage.
- Check the supply to the reader with a meter.
- Install a known good reader.
- Replace the reader only if the timeout disappears with the substitute.
- A timeout can come from the card, the reader, the cable or the control, so separating them takes spare parts and testing.
- Reaching the connector means opening an enclosure that contains mains-voltage parts.
- A repaired card system should be verified with real transactions.
