Speed Queen Washer Error Code EI02: Infra-Red Time-Out

EI02 is a time-out on the infra-red data link of a Quantum washer. The control waited for the external device and heard nothing back in time, so it dropped the exchange. Re-aim the device and repeat it, and call us if EI02 keeps returning.

Medium · inspection needed

Low: it affects only the programming or audit link, and the washer keeps running.

What does Speed Queen error code EI02 mean?

During a programming or audit exchange, the Quantum control and the outside device take turns: one asks, the other answers. The control gives the device a limited time to reply. If the reply does not come within that time, the control stops waiting, abandons the exchange and shows EI02. That makes EI02 a time-out rather than a bad message, and it tells us only that the conversation went silent. The wash cycle, door lock and water valves are not described by this code, and you will see it right after the failed attempt. The manual's list of things to look at covers the aim and distance of the external device, the device battery and whether it stayed awake, interference from bright light at the control window, and the condition of the window. A device that went to sleep partway through is the most common reason, so make sure it stays on until the exchange finishes.

Affected models and control systems

Quantum frontload (FLW1535C family) and Quantum topload (TLW13C family) washers with the electronic control.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • EI02 flashes on the display after a failed transfer attempt
  • The washer runs its cycles as usual
  • The exchange completes after the device is held closer and steadier

Possible causes

Listed in Speed Queen's documentation

  • Aim and distance of the external device
  • The device battery and whether it stayed awake
  • Interference from bright light at the control window
  • Control window condition

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code EI02 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A washer near a window or entrance where strong sun floods the control face
  • A device screen timeout that is shorter than the transfer

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Aim the external device at the control once more and repeat the exchange.
  2. Stay close and avoid moving until it finishes.
  3. If the machine sits beside a glass door, shade the control from direct sun, which can drown out infra-red.
  4. Should EI02 keep appearing, note it down and give us a call to arrange service.

How a technician diagnoses error code EI02

  1. Read the code and find out which device was used and how far from the window.
  2. Check that the device is charged and set to stay awake during the exchange.
  3. Repeat the transfer with the window shaded and cleaned.
  4. Try a second known-good device to separate a weak sender from a weak receiver.
  5. Inspect the window and the control for damage.
  6. Replace the control only after a known-good device also times out.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The infra-red receiver is on the main control board, which carries live supply behind the panel.
  • Isolating the device from the receiver takes test equipment and known-good units.
  • Reloading settings needs the machine's own programming data.

How error code EI02 differs from similar codes

EI02 is a time-out. EI0C also reports a time limit, but for an exchange that started and then stalled too long.

EI02Questions about Speed Queen error code EI02
Does EI02 mean the washer is broken?

No. It only says the infra-red exchange timed out; wash functions are not affected.

Will bright light really cause EI02?
