UniMac Commercial Washer Error Code E db: Drive Balance Switch
E db is the drive balance switch error on UniMac UC-series and UW pocket hardmount washer-extractors. The control found the balance switch input already closed at the start of the drain step. Turn the power off to clear it and restart once, and call us if E db returns.
Medium: the cycle stops until the switch circuit is corrected, but the guard is working as designed.
What does UniMac error code E db mean?
A balance switch tells the control when the machine is shaking too hard during extract. At the start of the drain step, the washer is not spinning, so that switch should be open. E db appears when the control finds the VFD balance switch input already closed at that point. Since it should be open, the control stops the cycle. The code points to the balance switch circuit rather than to the load. The input may be closed at the drive, the switch wiring or a connector may be shorted or loose, the switch may be stuck or misadjusted, or a drive input may read the switch wrongly. On the UC-series this applies only to F-speed models, so a different UC machine will not show it. The code is checked at the drain step, so a washer that finishes its fill and wash but stops at drain is the typical pattern.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to UniMac UC-series washer-extractors (F-speed models only) and UW pocket hardmount washer-extractors (UWL, UWN and UWU 035-125), in the CHM495R and PHM1263R families with the front-end control.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E db on the display
- Cycle stopping at the start of drain
- Machine running fine through fill and wash
Possible causes
Listed in UniMac's documentation
- A balance switch input already closed at the drive
- Switch wiring or a connector that is shorted or loose
- A balance switch that is stuck or misadjusted
- A drive input that reads the switch wrongly
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E db on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Lint or moisture bridging the switch contacts
- A switch bracket knocked out of position during a past service
- A wire chafed against the frame where the machine vibrates
Safe checks before calling for service
- Turn the main power off to clear the code.
- Open the door only after the drum stops and the lock releases.
- Do not touch the switch or the wiring behind the panels.
- Restart the cycle once.
- If E db returns, note that it appeared at the drain step and call us.
How a technician diagnoses error code E db
- Ask when in the cycle the code appeared and what model the washer is.
- With power locked out, inspect the balance switch, bracket and wiring.
- Check the switch for stuck contacts with a meter, in its resting position.
- Look for shorted or loose wiring and connector problems.
- Check the drive input for the switch signal.
- Adjust or replace the switch or wiring that fails.
- The switch sits in the machine's frame area with live drive wiring nearby.
- Adjusting a balance switch changes how the machine protects itself from out-of-balance loads.
- Telling a stuck switch from a drive input problem takes a meter.
How error code E db differs from similar codes
E db is the drive balance switch, while E FS is the frame balance switch and shows up when the switch is open instead.

Related UniMac washer error codes
Does E db mean the load was uneven?
Not by itself. It says the switch input was already closed at the start of drain.
Why only at drain?
That is the moment the control checks the input should be open.
Is it the same as E FS?
No. E FS is the frame balance switch seen open. E db is the drive balance switch already closed.
