UniMac Commercial Washer Error Code E FS: Frame Balance Switch

E FS is the frame balance switch error on UniMac UC-series and UW pocket hardmount washer-extractors: the control sees the frame balance switch open. Power the machine down, open the door only after the lock has released, and spread the load evenly. Call us if E FS returns on a normal load.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the cycle stops during extract, and the cause is often just an uneven load.

What does UniMac error code E FS mean?

The frame balance switch tells the control when the machine is shaking too hard during extract. It is a protective device, because an unbalanced basket can damage bearings and shake the machine across the floor. E FS appears when the control sees that switch open. On UC machines the cycle stops until power is cycled. A very uneven load is the plainest cause, such as a few heavy items mixed with light ones. A balance switch that is mounted loosely or needs adjusting can trip with a normal load. Wiring or a connector at the switch can be loose, and a worn frame or suspension can let the machine shake more than it should. If the code appears only with certain loads, the load is the reason. If it appears with an empty or ordinary load, look at the machine.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to UniMac UC-series and UW pocket hardmount (UWL, UWN and UWU 035-125) washer-extractors in the CHM495R and PHM1263R families with the front-end control.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • E FS on the display
  • Washer shaking hard during extract
  • Cycle stopping during spin up
  • Machine walking on the floor with a heavy load

Possible causes

Listed in UniMac's documentation

  • A balance switch that is mounted loosely or needs adjusting
  • Balance switch wiring or a connector that is loose
  • A heavy load that shook the frame and tripped the switch
  • A worn frame or suspension that lets the machine shake

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E FS on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A single large, wet item that bunched on one side of the basket
  • Mounting bolts that have loosened so the frame rocks on the floor
  • A shock or spring that has weakened, so the switch trips on a modest imbalance

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Power the machine down to clear the code.
  2. Open the door only after the drum has stopped and the lock has released.
  3. Spread the load evenly and avoid mixing a few heavy items with light ones.
  4. Start the cycle again.
  5. If E FS returns on a normal load, note the load and call us.

How a technician diagnoses error code E FS

  1. Ask about the load type and whether the machine shakes visibly.
  2. Check the machine is level and the mounting is tight.
  3. Inspect the suspension and frame for wear.
  4. Check the balance switch position and its adjustment.
  5. Test the switch contacts and wiring with a meter.
  6. Adjust or replace the switch, springs or mounts that fail.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Adjusting the balance switch changes how the machine protects itself from an unbalanced load.
  • Suspension and frame work involves heavy parts that can shift.
  • Switch wiring sits near live drive circuits.

How error code E FS differs from similar codes

E FS is the frame balance switch seen open, whereas E db is the drive balance switch seen already closed.
