UniMac Commercial Washer Error Code E Ht: Heat Timeout
E Ht is the heat error on UniMac QN, UC-series and UW pocket hardmount washer-extractors with a heater: the water did not reach the programmed temperature in time. Confirm the hot supply valve is open and the building water heater is working. Call us before more heat-dependent loads are washed.
Medium: the machine runs but may wash cold, which matters for linens that need hot water.
What does UniMac error code E Ht mean?
When a program calls for a heated wash, the control watches the water temperature and gives the heating a limited time to reach the set point. The QN control allows 2 hours, and the UC and UW controls give up at 120 minutes. If the water is still short of the temperature when time runs out, the control shows E Ht. On the UC and UW controls the heater output stays off for the rest of the cycle, so the wash may finish cold. That matters for linens that need hot water to be properly cleaned or sanitized. Hot water that arrives too cool at the machine is a common cause. A heating element or contactor may have failed, a temperature sensor may misread the wash water, or the water level may have been wrong when heat was called for.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to UniMac QN (such as the UCA020QN), UC-series and UW pocket hardmount washer-extractors with a heater, in the CHM1792C, CHM495R and PHM1263R families.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E Ht on the display
- Wash water staying cool or lukewarm
- Linens coming out not as clean as usual
- Cycle running long before the code appears
Possible causes
Listed in UniMac's documentation
- Hot water supply that arrives too cool at the machine
- A heating element or contactor that has failed
- A temperature sensor that misreads the wash water
- Water level that was wrong when heat was called for
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E Ht on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A building water heater that is undersized when several machines draw hot water together
- An element coated with scale, so it takes far longer to heat
- A level sensor that let the tub run too full for the element to keep up
Safe checks before calling for service
- On a QN machine, the door opening or any key press clears the code. On other machines, power down and back up.
- Confirm the hot supply valve is open and that the building's water heater is doing its job.
- Start a short hot cycle and see whether the water warms.
- Feel the hot supply hose, being careful of heat, to see that it is actually hot.
- If E Ht returns, call us before more heat-dependent loads are washed.
How a technician diagnoses error code E Ht
- Ask whether the hot supply is strong at other taps and how long the heating ran before the code.
- Measure the incoming hot water temperature at the machine.
- Check the level at which heat was requested.
- With power locked out, test the heating element for continuity and resistance.
- Test the heat contactor and the temperature sensor with a meter.
- Descale or replace the failed element, contactor or sensor.
- Heating elements and contactors run on live 208 to 240 V circuits.
- Hot water at the machine carries a scald risk during testing.
- A cold wash that was meant to be hot can leave linens under-cleaned, so the cause must be proven.
How error code E Ht differs from similar codes
E Ht is a heat timeout, whereas E FL is a fill timeout and E Hd is a QN message about water too hot to drain.

Related UniMac washer error codes
Will the wash still finish?
On UC and UW machines the heater stays off for the rest of the cycle, so the wash may finish cold.
How long does the control wait?
The QN control allows 2 hours, and UC and UW give up at 120 minutes.
Is my building water heater the problem?
It can be. We measure the incoming hot water before testing the machine's own heater.
