UniMac Washer Error Code E nr: I/O Board Not Ready

E nr on a UniMac QN washer-extractor means the control cannot get an answer from the input and output board, so the cycle cannot proceed. Turn the power off, turn it back on, and give the display time to settle. If E nr returns, leave the cabinet closed and call a technician.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the machine cannot start or continue a cycle until the I/O board answers.

What does UniMac error code E nr mean?

E nr stands for a board that is not ready. On UniMac QN washer-extractors such as the UCA020QN, the user control, which is the keypad and display, does not switch the machine's loads by itself. It sends commands to a separate input and output board that operates the water valves, the door lock and the motor commands. The user control talks to that board all the time, and at power-up it expects an answer. When the answer does not come, the control reports a communication error with the message E nr. Without the I/O board the control has no way to open a valve or lock the door, so the cycle cannot start or continue. When the problem stays, the manual points to the cable between the two boards, the power feed to the I/O board, a corroded connector, or a user control that is not getting a reply.

Affected models and control systems

The manual lists E nr for the CHM1792C family of UniMac QN washer-extractors (20-100 lb), with the UCA020QN as the example. It applies to the front-end control with a separate user control and I/O board.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • E nr shows on the display right after power-up or at the start of a cycle
  • The machine does not fill, lock the door or start the motor
  • Keypad presses are accepted but nothing in the machine responds

Possible causes

Listed in UniMac's documentation

  • Loose or broken cable between the user control and the I/O board
  • Lost power feed to the I/O board
  • Corroded connector on the I/O board
  • User control board that gets no reply from the I/O board

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E nr on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A power dip or brownout that left the I/O board locked up until the next restart
  • Vibration over years loosening the plug on the cable between the two boards

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Pull power to the machine, then restore it.
  2. Wait for the display to settle before pressing start.
  3. Leave the cabinet shut instead of poking at cables.
  4. If E nr returns, call us.
  5. Write down what the display shows and whether the code appeared right at power-up or mid-cycle.

How a technician diagnoses error code E nr

  1. Read the display at power-up and record how long E nr takes to appear and whether it clears on a restart.
  2. Confirm the incoming supply to the machine and the supply voltage reaching the I/O board.
  3. Inspect the cable and connectors between the user control and the I/O board for looseness, corrosion or damage.
  4. Check the board's power feed and its status indicators with a meter and the wiring diagram.
  5. Replace the cable, the I/O board or the user control only after the power and connection tests are done, then run a full cycle.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The I/O board and its power feed sit behind panels with line voltage, so the checks are not safe for an operator.
  • A cable, a connector, a power feed and a board can all produce the same message, which takes a meter and the wiring diagram to separate.

How error code E nr differs from similar codes

E nr is a board-to-board communication message. It is different from the E SP communication error listed for UC and UW machines, which concerns the main control and the motor control.

E nrQuestions about UniMac error code E nr
What does the I/O board do?

It switches the water valves, the door lock and other loads on command from the user control. If it does not answer, nothing can run.

Will E nr go away on its own?

A restart can bring the board back for a while. If the error returns, the cable, the connector or the board needs a proper look from a technician.

Is it worth fixing an older machine for this?

Often yes, since cable and connector problems are inexpensive. If the board turns out to be the failed part, we tell you before replacing it.
