UniMac Washer Error Code E SudS: Suds Lock

E SudS on a UniMac QN washer-extractor means suds remained after all the programmed suds routines, so the control holds the cycle instead of spinning a drum full of foam. Open the door or press any key to clear the display, then use less detergent in the next load.

Medium · inspection needed

Low: an operator-correctable stop that usually clears with a smaller detergent dose.

What does UniMac error code E SudS mean?

E SudS is the suds lock error on UniMac QN washer-extractors such as the UCA020QN. Foam in the drum is a problem for a washer-extractor, because spinning at high speed with a tub full of suds can overflow and strain the motor. The control watches the water level reading during the cycle. When foam makes the level look higher than it really is, the control runs its programmed suds routines, which are extra drain and rinse steps meant to clear the foam. If suds remain after all of those routines, the control stops and displays E SudS instead of going on to spin. It usually means too much detergent. Opening the door or pressing any key clears the display. Using less soap usually prevents it. The manual lists the detergent amount and type, the load size and soil, the rinse water supply and the level sensor reading as the areas to look at.

Affected models and control systems

Listed for the CHM1792C family of UniMac QN washer-extractors (20-100 lb), with the UCA020QN as the example model. It is a front-end control message.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Foam visible through the door glass or rising in the tub
  • Cycle holds and E SudS shows on the display
  • The machine repeats drain and rinse steps without finishing
  • Spin does not start after the rinse steps

Possible causes

Listed in UniMac's documentation

  • Detergent amount and type producing more foam than the cycle can clear
  • Load size and soil adding to the suds
  • Rinse water supply not delivering enough water
  • Level sensor reading that does not follow the real level

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E SudS on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A high-sudsing home laundry detergent used in place of a low-sudsing commercial one
  • Detergent dosed by hand with no adjustment for a small load
  • Residue from a previous load still foaming in the tub

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Open the door, or tap any key, and the display clears.
  2. Use less detergent in the next load.
  3. Check that the rinse water supply is open.
  4. Should E SudS come back even with a normal measure of soap, call us.
  5. Note the detergent brand, the amount used and the load type.

How a technician diagnoses error code E SudS

  1. Read the code, then check the detergent product, dose and dispensing method used.
  2. Confirm the rinse water supply and flow so the suds routines can dilute the foam.
  3. Run a rinse cycle with no detergent and watch whether the level and the foam behave normally.
  4. Check the pressure sensor tube and reading to make sure the level matches the water in the tub.
  5. Adjust the detergent supply or replace the part the tests point to, then run a full cycle to confirm the code is gone.
! Leave this to a technician
  • If foam is not the cause, the level sensor or rinse valves are, and testing them means opening cabinets with live 208-240 V wiring.
  • A level sensor that misreads foam as water depth needs readings taken while the machine is running.
  • Checking rinse water delivery involves the fill valves and their coils, which are handled by a technician.

How error code E SudS differs from similar codes

E SudS is a foam-driven hold. It differs from E PS, where the level signal is missing altogether, and from E nFLo, where too little water arrives.

E SudSQuestions about UniMac error code E SudS
What does suds lock mean?

The control saw foam it could not rinse out of the drum after all the programmed suds routines, so it stops the spin so the foam does not overflow.

Will less detergent fix it?

Often yes. Use the amount the detergent maker recommends for the load size. If it still foams, we look at the machine.

Can suds hurt the machine?

A drum full of foam can strain the motor and overflow onto the floor, which is why the control stops the cycle.
