UniMac Washer Error Code Ed05: IGBT Overcurrent

Ed05 on a UniMac UC-series washer-extractor with a motor drive means the drive found an overcurrent condition in its power stage, which can come from a shorted motor or wiring. Power down and leave the machine off for at least two minutes. If Ed05 returns, leave the washer off and call us.

Medium · inspection needed

High: a possible short in the motor circuit means the machine should stay off until it is tested.

What does UniMac error code Ed05 mean?

On UniMac UC-series washer-extractors such as the UCH020GNF with the motor drive, Ed05 is an IGBT overcurrent error. The IGBTs are the power switches inside the drive that shape the current going to the motor. The drive monitors that current, and if it detects an overcurrent shunt condition in the power stage, which can come from a shorted motor or wiring, it shuts off immediately to protect itself. The cycle stops and the display shows Ed05. The drive needs at least two minutes powered down, and the motor must be confirmed not shorted. Older Design 1 machines do not use this code, since it belongs to Design 2 and 3. The manual points to the motor and motor leads for a short, the drive power stage, drum drag that raises the current, and the condition of the input line.

Affected models and control systems

Listed for UniMac UC-series washer-extractors with a motor drive (CHM495R family, 20-100 lb), such as the UCH020GNF. Design 2 and 3 only; Design 1 machines do not use this code.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Ed05 on the display and the cycle stops suddenly
  • Machine shuts down the instant the motor tries to start or speed up
  • Code returns immediately after a restart
  • Possible burnt smell near the drive or motor

Possible causes

Listed in UniMac's documentation

  • Motor and motor leads with a short
  • Drive power stage
  • Drum drag that raises current
  • Input line condition

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Ed05 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Motor lead insulation worn through where it passes a metal edge, so it touches ground
  • Moisture reaching the motor terminals after a flood on the laundry floor
  • A power stage worn by years of heavy loads and repeated hard stops

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Power the machine down and leave it off for at least two minutes.
  2. Do not open the cabinet or handle motor leads.
  3. Power up and watch for the code on the next spin.
  4. If Ed05 returns, leave the washer off and call us.
  5. Note whether the code appears at the very start of the spin or at high speed.

How a technician diagnoses error code Ed05

  1. Read the code and note the cycle step where it appears.
  2. With power locked out and the drive discharged, check the motor windings and leads for a short to ground or between phases.
  3. Turn the drum by hand to check for drag from bearings or an obstruction.
  4. Check the supply voltage and the input line condition at the drive.
  5. Replace the motor or leads if shorted, and the drive only if the motor and wiring test clean.
! Leave this to a technician
  • A shorted motor or lead means damaged insulation on 208-240 V conductors, which is a shock hazard that should not be touched.
  • The drive holds a charge after power is removed, so its power stage should only be opened by a technician who respects the discharge wait.
  • Powering up again into a real short can destroy the drive, so the motor has to be tested before the machine runs.

How error code Ed05 differs from similar codes

Ed05 is a short-circuit style overcurrent in the power stage. Ed08 is a max overcurrent at the motor output, and Ed02 is a voltage problem, not a current one.

Ed05Questions about UniMac error code Ed05
Why two minutes off?

The drive needs time for its internal charge to fall and for it to reset. Restarting sooner can repeat the stop.

Does Ed05 mean the drive is dead?

Not always. A shorted motor or lead can trigger it, and the drive protected itself exactly as designed.

Can I run another cycle?

Only if one restart clears it and the next spin is clean. If it returns, keep the machine off and call us.
