UniMac Washer Error Code Ed09: Drive Current Sensor

Ed09 on a UniMac UC-series washer-extractor with a motor drive means the drive found its own current sensor not working properly at startup, so it will not start. Power the machine down and up, and make sure it has a steady supply. If Ed09 returns, call us.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the drive will not start the motor without a working current reading.

What does UniMac error code Ed09 mean?

On UniMac UC-series washer-extractors such as the UCH020GNF with the motor drive, Ed09 is a current sensor error. The drive measures how much current the motor draws, and it relies on that reading to protect the motor from overload and shorts. At startup it checks that its current sensing circuit gives a believable reading. If the sensor is not working properly, the drive has no safe way to watch the motor, so it will not start and the display shows Ed09. A power cycle sometimes clears a one-time glitch, for example after a supply disturbance at the moment of power-up. Design 2 and 3 washers are the ones where it appears. The manual lists a failed current sensing circuit on the drive, a loose connector on the drive board, poor supply quality at startup, and a drive board that cannot read motor current.

Affected models and control systems

Listed for UniMac UC-series washer-extractors with a motor drive (CHM495R family, 20-100 lb), such as the UCH020GNF. The manual limits Ed09 to Design 2 and 3 models.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Ed09 on the display as soon as a cycle tries to start
  • The motor never runs
  • Code comes back at every start after a few restarts
  • Other functions such as fill may still respond before the stop

Possible causes

Listed in UniMac's documentation

  • Current sensing circuit on the drive that has failed
  • Loose connector on the drive board
  • Poor supply quality at start-up
  • Drive board that cannot read motor current

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Ed09 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A brief supply sag at power-up that disturbed the drive's self-test
  • Connector pins on the drive board loosened by years of vibration
  • A drive board that has aged in a hot laundry room and drifted outside its test range

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Power the machine down and up.
  2. Make sure the machine is on a steady supply and nothing is overloading the circuit.
  3. Start a cycle and watch for the code at startup.
  4. If Ed09 returns, call us.
  5. Note whether it appears only after a power outage or on every start.

How a technician diagnoses error code Ed09

  1. Read the code and ask about recent power events.
  2. Measure the supply voltage at the drive during power-up and under load.
  3. With power locked out, check the drive board connectors for seating and corrosion.
  4. Run the drive's startup self-test repeatedly to see whether the failure is steady or intermittent.
  5. Replace the drive board only after the supply and connectors are cleared.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The drive board is powered from 208-240 V and holds a charge, so reseating its connectors is not safe for an operator.
  • A bad supply and a bad sensing circuit show the same code, which a meter separates.
  • Replacing a drive board without checking the supply can leave the new board failing the same self-test.

How error code Ed09 differs from similar codes

Ed09 is a startup self-test result for the drive's current sensing. Ed05 and Ed08 report actual overcurrent during running, which is a different condition.

Ed09Questions about UniMac error code Ed09
Does Ed09 mean the motor is bad?

No. It is about the drive's own current sensor, and the motor is not the reported problem.

Can a power cycle fix it?

Sometimes, if it was a one-time glitch. A repeat means the drive needs testing.

Why does it appear only at start?

The drive checks its current sensor when it starts, before it runs the motor.
