Victory Commercial Refrigerator Error Code HI / LO: Temperature Alarms
HI and LO are the high and low temperature alarms on Victory reach-ins with the VCC controller. HI means cabinet air is above its limit and LO means it is below the low limit, while the cabinet keeps running. Close the doors, let it recover, and check the food with a thermometer.
Medium: the cabinet keeps running, but food safety depends on how long the temperature stays out of range.

What does Victory error code HI / LO mean?
The VCC controller reads cabinet air with its probe and compares it to two alarm limits. When the temperature climbs past the upper limit, the display shows HI. When it falls under the lower limit, it shows LO. Unlike a protective shutdown, neither alarm stops the compressor, so the cabinet keeps trying to hold its set point while the warning is on. HI usually appears after a long door opening, a large warm load or a cooling problem, and it normally goes away when the box recovers. LO is less common and can mean the cabinet is overcooling or that the probe is reading wrong. The display text is HI / LO. Treat the message as a prompt to check the load and the box, not as proof that something has failed.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to Victory reach-ins with the VCC controller, such as the RSA-1D-S1-HC, per the RS/RSA manual alarm table. It does not cover Danfoss ERC cabinets, which show their own Hi and Lo messages.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- HI on the display after busy service
- LO on the display with cabinet running
- Display value drifting back to normal after a few minutes
- Food near the door warmer than food at the back
Possible causes
Listed in Victory's documentation
- A door left open on the cabinet, or a gasket that leaks
- A dirty condenser that lets cabinet air climb above the HI limit
- An iced evaporator coil limiting cold air in the box
- A control probe reading wrong, so LO appears too soon
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code HI / LO on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A door that does not latch because the hinge has sagged after years of heavy use
- Product stacked against the evaporator fan outlet so air cannot circulate
- Probe sitting in a cold air stream so LO shows while food is still at normal temperature
Safe checks before calling for service
- Close all doors fully and wait about 30 minutes for the cabinet to recover.
- Check the food with a thermometer and rely on that rather than the display.
- Clear lint and dust from the condenser area only if it is easy to reach.
- Move food if it is outside a safe range.
- If the alarm returns, note HI or LO and the time of day.
How a technician diagnoses error code HI / LO
- Compare the controller reading with a calibrated thermometer in the box.
- Check door gaskets, hinges and closers for leaks.
- Inspect the condenser and verify fan operation.
- Look at the evaporator for ice and confirm defrost is completing.
- Test the control probe resistance against a known reference.
- Replace the probe or repair airflow only after the test.
- Defrost heaters and fan motors are wired to live line voltage behind the panels.
- A cabinet that cannot hold temperature may have a refrigerant-side problem that needs certified handling.
- Judging a probe against the controller takes calibrated instruments and knowledge of the VCC settings.
How error code HI / LO differs from similar codes
HI and LO clear when temperature returns to range, unlike HA and HF on the same controller, which latch until reset by hand.

Can I keep using the cabinet with HI showing?
Yes, it keeps running, but check food temperature first and move anything that is out of range.
Will HI go away by itself?
Usually, once doors are closed and the box recovers. If it keeps coming back at the same time each day, the cause is likely a load or airflow pattern.
Why would LO appear in a refrigerator?
The box may be overcooling, or the probe may be reading colder than the air. A thermometer in the cabinet tells you which.
