Victory Commercial Refrigerator Error Code rE: Control Probe Not Reporting

RE on a Victory reach-in with the VCC controller means the main control probe is not reporting or is disconnected. The compressor then runs a fixed on and off pattern instead of following the real air temperature. Watch a thermometer in the cabinet and call for service.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the cabinet keeps cooling on a fixed pattern, but it no longer follows the real air temperature.

What does Victory error code RE mean?

The VCC controller depends on one main probe to decide when the compressor should run. Every few seconds it reads the probe, compares the value to the set point and switches the compressor on or off. When the reading disappears, either because the connector has come loose or the wire is broken, the control cannot judge temperature. Rather than leave the cabinet off, it shows rE and falls back to a duty-setting mode, a fixed pattern of compressor on and off times. The cabinet may stay cool for a while on that pattern, but it no longer follows the real air temperature, so it can overcool in light use or run warm during a rush. The display text is rE. The message points to the probe circuit, not the refrigeration system.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to Victory reach-ins with the VCC controller, such as the RSA-1D-S1-HC and RIS-1D-S1-HC, per the RS/RSA manual alarm table.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • RE on the display
  • Cabinet temperature drifting up or down with load
  • Compressor cycling on a steady rhythm regardless of door openings
  • Frost on the evaporator from overcooling

Possible causes

Listed in Victory's documentation

  • A loose or corroded connector on the VCC control probe
  • A broken wire between the control probe and the controller
  • A failed control probe input on the VCC board
  • A probe lead pinched by the door frame or fan shroud

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code RE on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Probe lead rubbed through where it passes the fan shroud
  • Moisture from washdown getting into the probe connector
  • Probe tip knocked from its holder during restocking

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Watch a thermometer inside the cabinet, since the compressor is on a fixed pattern.
  2. Keep the doors closed as much as possible.
  3. Make sure nothing is pressing on the probe wire inside the cabinet.
  4. Do not pull on wires or open panels.
  5. If rE stays on, note how warm or cold the box is running.

How a technician diagnoses error code RE

  1. Confirm rE and check the box temperature with a reference thermometer.
  2. Inspect the probe lead along its path for pinch points.
  3. Check the connector for corrosion and seating.
  4. Measure probe resistance and compare with its temperature.
  5. Test the controller input with a known-good probe.
  6. Replace the probe or controller only after that test.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Probe and controller connectors sit behind panels on a live control circuit.
  • Checking probe resistance against temperature takes a meter and reference values.
  • The fixed duty pattern can overcool or warm the load, so someone must judge the safe interim setting.

How error code RE differs from similar codes

RE is a probe problem on the VCC controller, whereas the pump-down messages LP, Pd and AtS on the same control relate to refrigerant pressure.

REQuestions about Victory error code RE
Can I keep the cabinet running with rE?

Yes, it keeps cooling on a fixed pattern, but check the box temperature often.

Will rE clear if I switch the cabinet off and on?

Only if the probe contact was momentary. A broken wire or a bad connector will bring it back.

Is the compressor failing?

Not from this message. RE points to the probe circuit.
