Manitowoc Ice Machine Error Code E04: High Condenser Temperature
E04 means the liquid line temperature on a Manitowoc Indigo ice machine ran too high, usually because the condenser cannot shed heat. Clear anything blocking air around the machine and note how hot the room is. Do not pressure wash or poke the coil; we clean and test it properly.
Medium: the machine slows or shuts down and output drops, but a cleaning often restores it.

What does Manitowoc error code E04 mean?
E04 is written to the Event Log of Manitowoc Indigo ice machines without the NXT display. The control board watches the temperature of the liquid line leaving the condenser while the machine runs. In normal operation the condenser removes heat from the refrigerant, either with air pulled across a coil or with a stream of cooling water. When that heat removal falls behind, the liquid line gets hotter than the board allows, and the board logs the event. On the newer G board, an alert appears only after ten trips in a row, so a single entry may pass unseen. The machine slows or shuts down, and ice output drops. The entry covers two situations: an air-cooled machine with a dirty or blocked condenser, and a water-cooled machine with a problem in the water condenser circuit. The log alone does not say which applies. The display text is E04, and the point to keep in mind is that the machine is struggling to reject heat, not that the refrigerant circuit is broken.
Affected models and control systems
Manitowoc Indigo series cubers with the non-NXT control board (Service menu > Event Log > View ELog). The G board and the earlier E board handle the alert differently.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Ice output lower than normal
- Machine runs a long time and then shuts down
- Warm air blowing out of the machine's vents
- Water-cooled units with warm drain water or weak flow
Possible causes
Listed in Manitowoc's documentation
- A dirty or blocked condenser that raises the Indigo liquid line temperature
- A condenser fan on an air-cooled Indigo that is stopped or slow
- A water valve or water flow problem on a water-cooled machine
- Hot room air recirculating back into the condenser
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E04 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Grease and lint packed into the condenser fins of a machine near a fryer line
- A machine pushed too close to a wall or another unit, leaving no clearance
- Scale built up inside a water-cooled condenser from hard water
Safe checks before calling for service
- Look at the condenser area and clear boxes, mops or anything blocking air.
- Note how hot the room is where the machine sits.
- Do not use a pressure washer or poke the coil.
- Call us to clean the condenser properly and test the fan or water flow.
How a technician diagnoses error code E04
- Read the Event Log for E04 entries and how often they repeat.
- Inspect the condenser coil for fouling and measure airflow across it.
- Check the fan motor and its capacitor, or on water-cooled units the water valve and flow.
- Compare the liquid line sensor reading with a calibrated thermometer.
- Clean the condenser and recheck the temperature under load before closing the job.
- Cleaning a condenser needs coil combs, protective covers and a controlled method, because bent fins cut airflow permanently.
- Testing a fan motor means working near live wiring behind the panel.
- Water-cooled condensers need descaling and flow measurement, which an operator cannot do safely.
How error code E04 differs from similar codes
E04 on a G board produces an alert only after 10 trips in a row, while earlier boards behave differently.

Can I keep running the machine with E04?
Briefly, yes, but a hot condenser keeps cutting ice output and strains the compressor. Clear the airflow and call us if it returns.
Will E04 clear by itself?
It may stop appearing once the machine cools down, but the cause, usually dirt or poor airflow, stays until the condenser is cleaned.
Is E04 the same as E05?
No. E04 is a high liquid line temperature, while E05 means the high pressure cutout opened three times in four hours.
