Manitowoc Ice Machine Error Code E09: Evaporator Flooding
E09 means the board of a Manitowoc Indigo ice machine saw almost no temperature difference between two compressor discharge readings, which it treats as liquid flooding the evaporator. Check that the water valve is open and the condenser is clear. If the machine sounds unusual, turn it off and call us.
High: liquid flooding can damage the compressor if the machine keeps running.

What does Manitowoc error code E09 mean?
On Manitowoc Indigo ice machines without the NXT display, E09 is logged when two compressor discharge line temperatures differ by less than 1.05 F. In a healthy system the discharge line runs hot and the two readings do not sit on top of each other. When they do, the board concludes that liquid refrigerant is reaching the evaporator and flooding it instead of boiling off as it should. This version of the entry applies to a single-evaporator, single-circuit machine. Flooding matters because liquid does not compress, so the compressor is at risk and ice output suffers. Staff may hear the compressor sound different, and the slabs can look slushy rather than firm. The board is working from temperature readings, so a sensor that reads wrong can produce the same entry. The display text for the entry is E09. A technician needs gauges to tell a real flood from a bad reading.
Affected models and control systems
Manitowoc Indigo series cubers with the non-NXT control board (Service menu > Event Log > View ELog). E09 is for single-circuit machines; dual-circuit units log E10.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Compressor sounds different or louder
- Slabs look slushy or soft
- Ice output lower than usual
- Compressor housing very cold to the touch
Possible causes
Listed in Manitowoc's documentation
- Expansion valve opening too far
- Discharge line temperature sensors
- Refrigerant overcharge
- Evaporator inlet and outlet readings
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E09 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- An expansion valve bulb that lost contact and tells the valve to open wide
- A discharge sensor lead that came loose and reads the room instead of the line
- Refrigerant added by a previous repair beyond the nameplate charge
Safe checks before calling for service
- Check whether the machine sounds different or the compressor housing is very cold.
- Make sure the water supply valve is open and the condenser is clear.
- Turn the machine off if you hear unusual noise.
- Call us before it keeps running in this condition.
How a technician diagnoses error code E09
- Read the Event Log and confirm E09 and its timing.
- Compare both discharge sensors with a reference thermometer.
- Measure suction superheat and discharge temperature with gauges.
- Inspect the expansion valve bulb and its insulation.
- Weigh the charge only after the readings point to an overcharge.
- Flooding can slug the compressor, so the reading must be confirmed with gauges before it runs longer.
- Adjusting or recovering refrigerant is certified sealed-system work.
- Telling a bad sensor from a real flood takes calibrated instruments.
How error code E09 differs from similar codes
E09 is the single-circuit version of the flooding test; E10 uses the same 1.05 F rule on a dual circuit.

Can I keep running the machine with E09?
Not if it sounds unusual. Liquid reaching the compressor can damage it, so turn the machine off and call us.
Will E09 clear itself?
The entry stays in the log. A flooding valve or a wrong sensor keeps returning until it is corrected.
Is E09 the same as E10?
They use the same temperature test, but E09 is for single-circuit machines and E10 for dual-circuit ones.
