Manitowoc Ice Machine Error Code E15: Low Liquid Line Temp

E15 means the liquid line of a Manitowoc Indigo ice machine fell below 60 F for over a minute during freeze, which the board links to the fan cycling control. Check that the condenser fan turns while ice is being made and note whether the machine sits in a cool room. Then call us to test the fan control.

Medium · inspection needed

Low: the machine keeps running, though output may vary.

What does Manitowoc error code E15 mean?

E15 shows in the log of Manitowoc Indigo ice machines without the NXT display when the liquid line temperature falls below 60 F for more than one continuous minute during the freeze cycle. On air-cooled machines, a low-ambient fan cycling control keeps the condenser from overcooling the refrigerant by cycling the fan on and off. If that control fails to cycle the fan correctly, the liquid line runs too cold. The board reads this as a problem with the fan cycling control and writes the entry. The condenser fan may cycle wrongly and ice production can wander as a result. It tends to show up in cool rooms, outdoors or in rooms with strong drafts across the condenser. The display text for the entry is E15. The cause can be the control, the fan motor and wiring, the liquid line sensor, or simply the surroundings, so a technician tests each.

Affected models and control systems

Manitowoc Indigo series cubers with the non-NXT control board (Service menu > Event Log > View ELog). E15 concerns the low-ambient fan cycling control on air-cooled machines. Other controllers use different numbers.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Ice output that rises and falls
  • Condenser fan running constantly or not at all
  • Machine in a cool or drafty location
  • Slabs forming slowly in cold weather

Possible causes

Listed in Manitowoc's documentation

  • Fan cycle control operation
  • Condenser fan motor and wiring
  • Liquid line temperature sensor
  • Ambient and airflow around the condenser

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E15 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A fan cycling control that is stuck so the fan never stops, chilling the liquid line
  • A machine placed in an unheated storage room or open dock area
  • A liquid line sensor that has slipped off the tube and reads cold

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Check that the condenser fan turns when the machine is making ice.
  2. Note whether the machine sits in an air-conditioned room, a cold room or outdoors.
  3. Clear any airflow restrictions near the condenser.
  4. Call us to test the fan control.

How a technician diagnoses error code E15

  1. Read the Event Log for E15 and whether it repeats on cool days.
  2. Note ambient temperature and drafts at the condenser.
  3. Test the fan cycling control and watch when the fan starts and stops.
  4. Check the fan motor, its wiring and the liquid line sensor.
  5. Replace the part that fails its test.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Testing the fan control means working near live wiring and a spinning fan.
  • Reading liquid line temperature accurately requires a thermometer on the pipe.
  • Telling a bad control from cold surroundings needs measuring the room as well as the machine.

How error code E15 differs from similar codes

E15 is a cold-side entry, the opposite of E04 and E05, which report heat that the condenser cannot shed.

E15Questions about Manitowoc error code E15
Can I keep running the machine with E15?

Yes, for a time, but ice output may wander. It is best to have the fan control tested.

Will E15 clear when the weather warms?

It may stop in warm weather, but the control that caused it is still there for the next cool spell.

Is E15 the same as E04?

No. E04 is a liquid line that is too hot, while E15 is one that is too cold.
