Manitowoc Ice Machine Error Code E27: Bin Level Probe, High Sensor

E27 is the high-position entry for the bin level probe on a Manitowoc Indigo ice machine; the thermistor stayed out of range for over ten minutes. The high sensor tells the board the bin is full, so the machine may keep making ice into a full bin. If the bin is overflowing, turn the machine off and call us.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the machine may overfill the bin and need to be shut off.

What does Manitowoc error code E27 mean?

E27 is the high-position entry for the bin level probe on Manitowoc Indigo ice machines without the NXT display. The thermistor reading stayed out of range for more than ten minutes. The high sensor is the one that tells the board the bin is full, so without it the machine may keep making ice into an already full bin or fail to stop on time. That can push ice against the lid or curtain and leave the bin overflowing. This makes E27 the most visible of the three bin level entries. The display text for the entry is E27. The documented causes are a broken wire to the high sensor, a high thermistor covered in ice or scale, moisture inside the probe connector, or a probe that has moved from its mounting.

Affected models and control systems

Manitowoc Indigo series cubers with the non-NXT control board (Service menu > Event Log > View ELog). E27 is the high position; E25 is low and E26 is medium.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Bin overfilling with ice pressing against the lid or curtain
  • Machine not stopping when the bin is full
  • Ice jammed around the probe
  • The E27 line in the Event Log

Possible causes

Listed in Manitowoc's documentation

  • A broken wire to the high position bin level sensor
  • A high thermistor covered in ice or scale
  • Moisture inside the bin probe connector
  • A bin level probe that has moved from its mounting

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E27 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Ice packed against the top of the probe by a bin that is filled to the brim
  • A probe lead pinched by the bin lid or curtain frame
  • Water vapor that freezes inside the connector at the top of the bin

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. See whether the bin is overfilling and ice is pressing against the lid or curtain.
  2. Clear any ice jammed around the probe.
  3. Turn the machine off if the bin is overflowing and call us.
  4. Do not remove the probe.

How a technician diagnoses error code E27

  1. Read the Event Log for E27 and check E25 and E26.
  2. Inspect the high sensor, wire and connector for ice, breaks or moisture.
  3. Clean and dry the sensor, then retest.
  4. Measure thermistor resistance against the chart.
  5. Replace the probe only if the high sensor still reads out of range.
! Leave this to a technician
  • An overfilled bin can strain the curtain and ice drop, so a technician checks the damage too.
  • Thermistor testing needs a meter and a chart.
  • The probe connects to the control board, a line-voltage area that operators should not open.

How error code E27 differs from similar codes

E27 is the entry that can allow overfilling, while E25 and E26 mostly cause mistimed starts and stops.

E27Questions about Manitowoc error code E27
Can I keep running the machine with E27?

Not if the bin is overflowing. Turn it off and call us.

Will E27 clear by itself?

Cleared ice or moisture may let it pass, but a broken wire or damaged sensor will not recover.

Why does it keep making ice when the bin is full?

The high sensor is what says the bin is full. When it is out of range, the board has no way to know.
