Victory Freezer Error Code Ei: Virtual Probe Failure

Ei on a Victory FS or FSA freezer means the controller cannot work out its calculated virtual probe value. This usually happens because a probe it depends on has failed. Look for other probe alarms first, since fixing that probe should clear Ei.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the freezer may keep running, but a calculated probe that cannot be derived reduces control accuracy.

What does Victory error code Ei mean?

Ei is the virtual probe failure alarm in the alarm table for Victory FS and FSA hydrocarbon freezers. A virtual probe is not a physical sensor. The controller calculates a temperature from one or more real probes, such as Pb1 to Pb5, and uses that number for regulation or alarms. If one of the real probes it depends on stops reporting, the calculation cannot be completed and Ei appears. The manual states the meaning as an inability to derive the calculated probe, usually because a probe it depends on has failed. For this code the manual table lists only the LED state, the relay behavior, the reset type and the enabling parameters. It names no causes and no operator actions. The important point for the operator is that Ei usually sits alongside another alarm. Because the number is derived, the reading that matters is the failed source probe. Treating Ei alone, without looking at the other alarms, can send the visit in the wrong direction.

Affected models and control systems

Ei is listed for Victory FS and FSA hydrocarbon freezers with the Eliwell-type controller and probes Pb1 to Pb5, in the alarm table on printed pages 18-19 of the user manual. Which real probes feed the virtual probe depends on the unit's parameter setup.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Ei on the controller display
  • A second probe alarm showing in the alarm list
  • Temperature display jumping or stuck

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Ei on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Probe that feeds the virtual value disconnected or open
  • Probe wiring damaged between cabinet and controller
  • Parameter setting that points the virtual probe at an input with nothing connected

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Look at the display for any other alarm code and write each one down.
  2. Check that the door is closing and the freezer is not frosting up around the evaporator area.
  3. Do not unplug probes or open the controller housing.
  4. Watch whether Ei clears when the other probe alarm is dealt with by a technician.
  5. Report every alarm shown, in order, since Ei depends on another probe. The manual gives no operator action for it.

How a technician diagnoses error code Ei

  1. Read all active alarms and history, listing which probes report errors.
  2. Find out from the parameter list which probes the virtual probe uses.
  3. Test each of those probes for continuity and resistance against its chart.
  4. Check connectors and cable runs for damage or moisture.
  5. Correct the failed probe and confirm Ei clears and the calculated value follows the real temperature.
  6. Check the virtual probe parameters if every real probe tests good.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Reading and changing the virtual probe parameters is service-level programming of the controller.
  • Probe testing means working near live wiring in a cabinet that uses a flammable hydrocarbon refrigerant.
  • A wrong parameter can stop regulation altogether, so it needs the unit's factory data.

How error code Ei differs from similar codes

Ei is a derived-value alarm, unlike EL, which reports a single physical LINK2 probe that cannot be read.

EiQuestions about Victory error code Ei
Can I use the freezer while Ei is on?

Check the stored product temperature closely. A failed source probe can affect how the freezer is regulated.

Will Ei clear on its own?

Only if the underlying probe problem was temporary. Otherwise it stays until the real probe is repaired.

Is Ei a problem with the controller itself?

The manual says it is usually a dependent probe that has failed, so the controller is not the first suspect.
