Victory Freezer Error Code nPA: General Pressure Switch Alarm

NPA on a Victory FS or FSA freezer is the general pressure switch alarm: a pressure switch input on the controller has tripped. The manual does not say which side of the system it covers. A technician should read the refrigeration pressures before the freezer is left running.

Medium · inspection needed

High: a tripped pressure switch can stop the compressor and leave the freezer without cooling.

What does Victory error code NPA mean?

NPA is listed in the Victory FS and FSA alarm table as the general pressure switch alarm. The Eliwell-type controller has an input for a pressure switch on the refrigeration circuit. If the switch opens or closes beyond its set point, the controller reports nPA and, depending on setup, can stop the compressor. The manual says only that a pressure switch input has tripped. It does not say whether the pressure involved is high or low, it gives no causes and no operator action, and the table lists just the LED, relay, reset type and enabling parameters. The word general is the key: nPA does not say whether the problem is high discharge pressure or low suction pressure. That has to be found by reading the pressures with gauges. The freezer uses a flammable hydrocarbon refrigerant, which is a further reason to leave pressure work to trained people.

Affected models and control systems

NPA is listed for Victory FS and FSA hydrocarbon freezers with an Eliwell-type controller and probes Pb1 to Pb5, in the alarm table on printed pages 18-19. The same table also lists PA, LPA and HPA, which are related pressure alarms.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • NPA on the controller display
  • Alarm LED on
  • Compressor stopped, or cycling off early

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code NPA on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Pressure switch contact open because system pressure went out of its range
  • Condenser airflow blocked, raising pressure
  • Switch wiring loose or the input open

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Check that the front and back of the freezer have clear air space and that the grille is not blocked.
  2. Look for obvious dust matting on the condenser area through the grille.
  3. Do not open panels or reset any switch by hand.
  4. Note whether the compressor is running or silent when nPA shows.
  5. Write down the time and the cabinet temperature, and mention other pressure codes if shown.

How a technician diagnoses error code NPA

  1. Read the alarm and note whether the compressor is stopped.
  2. Connect gauges and read suction and discharge pressure.
  3. Check the pressure switch for continuity at its set point.
  4. Check condenser airflow and fan operation.
  5. Check input wiring and the parameter that enables the pressure input.
  6. Replace the switch only after it fails the test against gauge readings.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Pressure checks require gauges on a sealed circuit that holds a flammable hydrocarbon refrigerant.
  • Pressure switch and compressor circuits carry line voltage.
  • Bypassing a pressure switch removes a safety device and is never an operator step.

How error code NPA differs from similar codes

NPA is the general version. PA is listed beside it with the same meaning, while LPA and HPA are the labeled high and low pressure entries.

NPAQuestions about Victory error code NPA
Can I run the freezer with nPA on?

If the compressor has stopped, the freezer is not cooling, so move food promptly.

Will nPA clear by itself?

The reset type is in the manual's table. A switch that tripped on a temporary pressure change may reset, but the cause should be checked.

Is nPA a refrigerant leak?

The manual does not say so. A technician has to read pressures to know.
