Manitowoc Ice Machine Safe Mode Alert: Probe Failure
The Safe Mode alert means the ice thickness probe or the water level probe has failed. The machine keeps making ice for up to 72 hours while the alert flashes, then goes to standby. Have the failed probe serviced.
Medium: the machine keeps making ice for a limited time, but a probe has failed.

What does Manitowoc Safe Mode alert mean?
The Indigo NXT control relies on two probes: the ice thickness probe, which tells it when the slab is ready to harvest, and the water level probe. If one or both fail, the control enters Safe Operation Mode so that the ice machine does not simply stop. It keeps making ice using a safe timed routine, for up to 72 hours, and an alert flashes on the display while it does. At the end of that time it goes to standby and turns off. The manual states no action beyond the alert. The control leaves safe mode on its own if a normal sensor signal returns, and the failed probe should be serviced. The listed causes are an ice thickness probe failure and a water level probe failure. Running in safe mode is a grace period, not a repair, and the ice may be less consistent.
Affected models and control systems
Manitowoc Indigo NXT ice machines: air-cooled, water-cooled, remote and QuietQube models. Earlier Indigo and other Manitowoc series use different alert text.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Alert flashing on the display
- Ice slab thickness varying from cycle to cycle
- Machine going to standby after about 72 hours
Possible causes
Listed in Manitowoc's documentation
- Ice thickness probe failure
- Water level probe failure
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind Safe Mode alert on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Scale on the probe tips changing its readings
- Probe cable damaged near the reservoir
- Connector at the board corroded by moisture
Safe checks before calling for service
- Note that the machine is still making ice and that the alert is flashing.
- Check that the water supply is on.
- Avoid unplugging the machine to clear the alert.
- Call for service soon, since safe mode lasts at most 72 hours.
How a technician diagnoses Safe Mode alert
- Read the alert and the probe status.
- Clean the probes and check for scale.
- Inspect the probe cables and connectors.
- Test the ice thickness probe and water level probe signals.
- Replace the failed probe and confirm the machine leaves safe mode.
- The probe circuits connect to the live control board.
- The reservoir and evaporator are wet areas with electrical parts nearby.
- Safe mode hides the problem, so waiting risks a shutdown.
How Safe Mode alert differs from similar codes
Safe Mode is a probe failure alert. E01 and E02 are cycle time alerts.
