Wascomat Washer Error Code 05: NTC High Temp

Code 05 means the NTC temperature sensor reads above 98 C (208 F), which the control treats as a shorted sensor or damaged cable. Reset the machine once. If the code returns, the sensor circuit needs testing by a technician.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: heated programs stop, and a wrong temperature reading needs checking before normal use resumes.

What does Wascomat error code 05 mean?

The NTC sensor is a thermistor whose resistance falls as it gets hotter. The Compass control watches that resistance, and when it drops below roughly 350 ohm the control reads a temperature above 98 C (208 F). It then shows ERROR 005 / NTC HIGH TEMP and stops the program rather than keep heating on an unreliable reading. A real wash temperature that high is unusual, so the manual points to two electrical causes: a short circuit inside the sensor, or a break in the cable to it that lets conductors touch. The control cannot tell a true overheat from a shorted sensor, which is why the code is handled with caution and a resistance check. The reading is also the control's only view of the water temperature, so a wrong one affects every heated program.

Affected models and control systems

Wascomat washer-extractors W465H-W4300H, W475S-W4330S and W475N-W4330N with the Compass Control.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • ERROR 005 / NTC HIGH TEMP is shown and the program stops
  • The washer displays a temperature far above what the water feels like
  • Heated programs refuse to start while cold ones may run
  • The code comes back as soon as the machine is switched on again

Possible causes

Listed in Wascomat's documentation

  • Short circuit in the sensor
  • Break in the cable to the sensor

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code 05 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Water or detergent that has entered the sensor connector and created a conductive path
  • A cable crushed against the tub or frame where the insulation has worn through

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Feel the outside of the drum cautiously. If the washer is hot to the touch, switch it off at the disconnect and call us.
  2. If it is not hot, switch the machine off for a minute and on again.
  3. Run a cold-water program to see whether the washer otherwise operates.
  4. Do not touch sensor plugs or open panels. Note the code and which program was running, and call us.

How a technician diagnoses error code 05

  1. Read the code and history, and confirm the real water temperature with a thermometer.
  2. Measure the NTC resistance and compare it with the manual's table of approximate values.
  3. Check the sensor cable for pinched or worn insulation and for a short between conductors.
  4. Inspect the connector for moisture or corrosion.
  5. Check how the control responds to a known good resistance at the input.
  6. Replace the sensor or the cable only after the test shows a short.
! Leave this to a technician
  • A heating system with a wrong temperature reading can overheat water and laundry, so we test before we restore it.
  • Resistance checks happen at the control and sensor with the cabinet powered down and live parts nearby.
  • Confirming a short means measuring against the manual's table, not judging by feel.

How error code 05 differs from similar codes

Code 05 is the high-temperature counterpart of code 04 NTC LOW TEMP, which reports the same sensor reading too low.

Error code 05Questions about Wascomat error code 05
Is the water really above 208 F?

Usually not. A shorted sensor or damaged cable reads as extreme heat, so check the real temperature first.

Can I keep washing in cold water?

You might be able to, but we would not rely on it until the sensor circuit has been tested.

Will code 05 clear on its own?

If the cause is a loose or damp connection it may come and go, but it will return until the sensor or cable is fixed.
