MJ40 fryers are 40 lb gas fryers that run on millivolt power from the pilot, so they need no electric hookup. The MJ140, MJ240 and MJ340 numbers show how many vats are in the line. Because there is no outlet, a kitchen without power can still fry, which is why they are common in small shops.
Pilot trouble is the usual call. We check the pilot flame, the thermopile signal and the gas valve before we look at the thermostat. Draft and dust can blow a pilot out.

No. It makes its own tiny signal from the pilot flame, so there is no plug to connect. That is also why a weak pilot causes most of the problems on these fryers.
Why will my pilot not stay lit?
A weak pilot, a worn thermopile or a drafty spot can all do it. We test the pilot flame, the signal from the thermopile and the gas valve, in that order. We also check for drafts. We also check for drafts.
What if I smell gas?
Walk out of the building and report it to the gas utility from a safe spot. Do not light anything. Call us once the utility says it is safe. Never use a lighter or switch.
