Wascomat Washer Error Code 17: Door Lock
Code 17 means the door lock is locked at program start even though the CPU board did not ask it to lock. Open the door, close it again and restart. If the code returns, the door lock circuit or switch needs a technician.
Medium: the machine will not start while the lock circuit reports a wrong state.
What does Wascomat error code 17 mean?
Before a program starts, the Compass control expects the door lock to be released, since nothing has asked it to lock. When the program is about to begin, the control reads the locked-door signal. If the signal says the door is locked although the CPU board has not requested locking, the control stops and shows ERROR 017 / DOOR LOCK. The test guards against a lock stuck in the locked position or a locked-door switch that reports locked when it is not. Either one would make the control's picture of the door unreliable. The manual lists no individual causes and tells us only to check the door lock circuit and its switch. Because this code is about a lock that is locked when it should not be, it is the reverse of the failure reported by code 03.

Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code 17 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A lock mechanism that is stuck in the locked position after a power loss mid-cycle
- A locked-door switch whose contacts stay closed or are wired as closed
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the machine off at the disconnect and wait about a minute so the lock can release.
- Try opening the door gently. Do not force a locked door.
- Switch the machine on and start the program again.
- If the code returns, note whether the door felt locked and what happened before the code, then call us.
How a technician diagnoses error code 17
- Read the code and history to confirm it appears at program start.
- Check whether the lock is physically engaged while the control has not commanded it.
- Test the locked-door switch and its contacts with a meter.
- Inspect the door lock circuit wiring for a short that fakes a locked signal.
- Check how the control reads the input with the lock released.
- Replace the lock or switch only after the test points to it.
- The door lock circuit is a safety circuit, and we do not bypass it.
- A stuck lock may hold wet laundry inside, and releasing it correctly needs the right procedure.
- Switch and wiring tests are done at mains-powered connections.
How error code 17 differs from similar codes
Code 17 is the reverse of code 03 DOOR LOCK FAIL, which means the lock did not lock when it was asked to.

Related Wascomat washer error codes
Why is the door locked before I started?
The control reads a locked signal without having asked for it. The lock may be stuck or the switch may report the wrong state.
Can I force the door open?
No. Forcing the door can damage the latch and the lock. A technician can release it safely.
Will the code clear on its own?
Sometimes a power reset clears a stuck lock, but a repeat code means the lock circuit needs testing.
