02What goes wrong

Common booster heaters problems we fix

In plain words, the way kitchen and laundry staff describe them when they call.

01

Rinse water arriving lukewarm

02

Dishes staying wet or spotty

03

Heater tripping the breaker repeatedly

04

Relief valve dripping or hissing

05

Unit humming but never getting hot

06

Display or indicator light stays off

A booster heater is a small, insulated water heater that raises incoming hot water to the higher rinse temperature a commercial dishwasher needs. Most are electric and hang on a wall or sit under a counter near the machine. Larger kitchens may use steam or gas-fired designs, and some dish machines have one built in.

What wears them out

Hard water is the main enemy. Scale builds on the heating elements and inside the tank, so the heater works harder and takes longer to reach temperature before an element finally burns out. A warm equipment room is hard on wiring and controls, and a power surge after a storm or an outage can damage a control.

We begin with the power supply, the elements, the thermostat and limit controls, the pressure relief valve and the water feeding the unit. A rinse that is too cool can come from the heater, from the water supplied to it or from the dish machine, so we test each rather than guess.

Repair or replace, and what to have ready

If the tank is sound, new elements and controls are usually worthwhile. If the tank leaks or is heavily scaled inside, we explain why a new unit may cost less over time. Have the model label ready, and tell us what the dish machine and the rinse are doing.

Please do not work on the wiring or remove the relief valve yourself, and call a licensed plumber for any new gas line or water connection.

FAQBooster Heater questions
How do I know the booster heater is the problem?

Lukewarm rinse water and slow-drying dishes point toward the heater, but they can also come from a weak water supply or a failing dish machine. We test the heater first and tell you what we cannot rule out.

Is a dripping relief valve dangerous?

A relief valve that drips or hisses is either doing its job or has worn out, and either way the unit needs attention. Shut off the dish machine, follow your food-safety plan, and call us. Do not cap or plug the valve.

Do you work on older booster heaters?

Yes. Older and out-of-warranty heaters are common in our work. We check the elements, thermostat and wiring, give a written price before work, and tell you plainly if replacing the tank is the better choice.
